Forced name change

Hey.
My beastlord Titan just got a forced name change. I wasent sure when i created him if it was a allowed name or not, but i can see why it wouldent be and im not arguing about that you guys dont accept it.

What i am however wondering if its possible to change the system which forces you to change your name.

As it is now it you get disconected every 2 minutes untill you choose a new name.

Fine this forces you to choose a new name.. It also completly destroys the game play on the specific character, meaning any group , event, whatever you are in loose a player.

Im not saying that you shouldent enforce the name change, but perhaps allow a few hours to choose a new name. I for example did not choose Titan to piss anyone off or because i wanted to get away with anything.

Im sure there are names out there which are worse and might deserver the 2 min thing. but for milder names i would really appreciate it if there was a pondering / thinking time allowed. Maybe a day ( 12 hrs ) or something in which you could play as normal. but after those 12 hours expired the two minute thing kicks in and make sures you are not stalling.

I see my character name as pretty important, its gotta sound good. I can reroll a character if the name starts to annoy me. I cant just come up with a name in 2 minutes, it takes me time to think of one which i will be happy with. Maybe im the only one that feels that way about it, but one more day wouldent be that much of a problem would it?

Like i said before it could be used for the better of the bad names..? Seems kind of harsh to not be able to play the character at all right off the bat, and gives the group your in a chance to finish off whatever they are doing.

Thanks

The name change is a major inconvenience because its intent is you fix it immediately. If you were allowed 2 hours or whatever, you could effectively keep the name forever.

What you are describing as being disruptive is fully intended. If you cant think of a name in 2 minutes, stay offline until you come up with one, that way you arent constantly logging back in

i gotta ask, how would that enable a player to keep their illegal name indefinatly? after 2 hours, the disconnect every 2 min thing kicks in... the 2 hours is just some thinking time, and a chance to finish whatever you were doing, grouping/raiding whatever...
camping wouldn't stop the timer, 2 hours online Or offline...

personally i dont think this would be at all a bad idea, even 1 hour to get a chance to finish up whatever a player was doing..

but i trust you know what your talking about :)

Reading the naming policy allows a player to avoid this situation completely. And if by chance they pick a name that is later to be found against the policy, like Ikaa said, you'll have to decide on a name outside of the game and log in only when you're ready.

Because relogging would start the 2 hour timer over. To have it not would require an overhaul of the nameflag code, when it does its job just fine as it is.

ah, i didnt know it would reset the timer, sorry, then i completely understand.

@ Xach
Titan was nameflagged in the middle of a Tmap group with me.. and it basically meant we were doing a map with 5 people, and it kinda sucked cause we didnt get the loot, chest popped before we got the mobs down.

this would remedy that, but since camping would reset the timer, this idea wont work.

Like Xach said, reading the naming policy would prevent this from happening. I guess you could always avoid inviting people with suspicious names as well (might prevent people from going against the policy in the future). Picking and choosing which names are more "mild" than others isn't something the staff wants to sort out when they already have a lot to do.

You do have to admit, a name policy is always a gray area in any game and many times a name can be viewed in a different light by whatever GM/Mod/Admin/Whatever evaluates it. Some names just natrualy seem to be loopholes in such policies, sometimes intended by the creator and many times not.

When playing shards I have been mindful of the names I've picked because I have read all the policies and I've even advised against some names/combos to friends that have been interested and ended up playing. I'm willing to bet that some peoples names do get flagged for a rename even when the creator thinks its within the rule set.

obvious names/offensive names are flagged as soon as they're noticed. if its a name that could be word play or perhaps something that sounds like another word, its usually reviewed by someone else before hand.

its not like we*or atleast i dont* go around looking for people to piss off by changing their names.

you get to play here for free, a name change isnt going to kill you.

I did not really even think any of the GM's did so. All have seem pretty fair and nice so far :) Though an evil GM is fun to have once in awhile that will reign with an iron fist!

In my short time here so far I've been happy with the GM service and happy to see the jails/bans dished out to idiots who disregard a pretty simple rule set. I've been so happy to see a chuck norris free public chat... its been music to my ears... err eyes?

If you think your name is in that gray area, pick a different name.

No you don't !

On the Titan thing it was a matter of time before it happens. I don't understand how it lasted so long tbh. I didn't say anything cause once I reported a name and for that reason I got looked at and got my name nerfed too (note for later don't do shit while it's Banfest)... had the 2mn thingie while in a group in MielC crypt at a time where it was far from trivial for me and the guildies I was grouping with. And I chose a lame name after the first kick-out cause we couldn't afford losing a toon either. People need to read policy or suffer the consequences.

And if it's an inconvenience...what would a flagged name person deserve ? jail until he fixes name ? not possible to log in before it's fixed ? same deal

I was thinking more along the lines that when the player was first flagged he got an hour or so before the 2min thing kicked in.
If the player logs out it kicks in right away, because then they obviously were done with whatever.

Just a buffer to get out of whatever you are doing.

If it requires a big rewrite i guess its too big a bother was just thinking if it was an easy fix.

Not meaning to stir up a shitstorm here but i was just wondering why names like
Thinkmeats, build up of think and meat (sorry for picking on you, just the first thing that came to mind) are allowed, why is it different than titan, or are we allowed to have names built up of words as long as they dont have frog, croak, or catcrack or similar in them..
or is it a stfu our sandbox not yours kinda thing?

Admins can have any name they want as they are not playable characters. ALL of the admin who have toons have toons with suitable names. Just because they are admin does not make them immune to the naming policy on their playable characters.

(P.S. Thinkmeats is an admin/dev if you did not know)

I have seen a couple names in the past though which have been pretty bad. I remember seeing some kind of legolas play on words one day and I wished that person had a GM reach though the monitor and punch them in the kidney. (maybe some day computer technology will allow this!) Until then I'm sure the system will work the way it has been :)

Actually... one thing that would work. (and who knows if the game would allow it!) If your flagged for the name change your character also gets tagged with rabies. That has to be one of the most annoying spells I ever thought the game had. It would have to be some ultra incurable rabies that would last a month. That would get people to name there toons correct!

No.. then it would become a game to see who could get rabies, and then spread it around a bank area.

Jail is much more effective.

Thinkmeats is an admin toon, his player toons however certainly follow naming policy, as do every other staff members.

i dont think the thread is really turning into a shitstorm or anything. i think this thread is just answering questions/suggestions.

admins/gms/dev get to pick a name as they chose that isnt their original playing toon. so i have my monk elulu, i might to lulu but there is a toon named lulu. or elu, but there is elo who is also a gm. so im ashleigh. or whatever. its to not confuse a player with their gm or a player as a gm*who isnt really a gm*. plus some gms/devs may or may not even give out who their toons are in game.

but, gm names are still within naming policy*somewhat*. no gm has a copyrighted name or celebrity name or offensive name.

the server encourages role play, and with names like stinkybottom mcgnome sort of kills it. plus...come on. most people who play on this server would rather do without names like that. i know i rather like the naming policy :keke:
