Fishing skill

After painstakingly searching the forums and reading thru tons of materials I still do not have a definitive answer.
My question is this, my level 4 char is stuck at fishing skill lvl 20. Is fishing level based? I believe I read somewhere that fishing is not restrictive to stats and level. But after incurring this problem tried to go back and read it again and can no longer locate the post.

My char has switched zones several times and has clicked fishing for over 6 hours now without a skillup. He is wearing all three fishing mod items. After exhausting all my ideas I asked in OOC about fishing and was told that it IS level based and wouldnt advance past 20 at level 4.

I need to know is fishing level based? And if not does anyone have any ideas as to why my skill wont go up? Is this a new proble with a recent patch?

I don't believe fishing is level based. None of the other tradeskills are.

Even if it were, the standard cap for skills is 5 * (level +1), so you should be able to get to 25. It's probably the zones you are fishing in. You need to find a zone that has fish that you can catch, but that are not trivial to you (you don't catch them "without a struggle"). The wiki has good information on the fish skillup levels, and then you can crossreference what zone those fish can be caught in. (I find the zone-level information to be less accurate or precise than the fish information).
 
Thank you for the quick response and help :) I didnt realize the zones had their different trivial requirements. Will look into this and give it another try.

Read the message when you catch a fish.
If you get something about effortlessly catching a fish, you can no longer raise your skill on that fish.
If everything in a zone is giving that message, time to move on.
 
Wiki has some useful tips, even though not all trivial levels are 100% accurate.
Tradeskills also give experience above skill of 30 (iirc) so you will actually also get "normal" xp with fishing once you skill up a little.
