i am at 241 fishing and have +6 fishing from items.......do i have a better chance of getting tmaps if i have 250 fishing and the +6 or will i have the same chance with 244 fishing and the +6 from items equaling 250?

Not sure if fishing works the same way (due to the different messages), but in other trade skills there are items to make which have a skill > 250, so 250 +6 makes you succeed more than 244 +6. You can tell this since you don't get trivial messages when making them @250+items. In fact, IIRC, you need 250 mining plus the bonuses from some items to even have a chance at mining Deepmetal (there was a post about this at one point).

Fishing maps, the message is always "you caught something", so there's no way to tell if a map was caught "trivially" or not.

Being that close, I wouldn't take any chances and would go ahead and max out the skill before focusing on maps. (Indeed, I did exactly that... twice.)

Somebody told me that after they got 250 and the +6 items, they got at some point the fishing rod from COM and their catch rate improved even further. My impression is that higher maps must have a trivial higher than 250, so anything helps. I would definitely skill up to 250 just in case, in fact I did on both my fishers.

For fishing, everything you can fish up has a minimum skill attached to it. When you hear someone say "you can begin fishing maps at 150", what they really mean is that 150 is the minimum skill required to successfully fish up a Bottled Simple Map. (To my knowledge the numbers for the other maps remain undisclosed)

The minimum skill check is done against your modified skill (in your example, the modified skill would be 244 + 6 = 250), and yes, there are things that require more than 250 skill to catch, rather than just losing your bait.

I have never caught higher than a VD map, which i have caught one of with +8 fishing skill on my fisher Pokii

ED maps are extremely rare

I wouldn't go with a decent increase. I average about 1 treasure map per 200 bait at 250 +6. I haven't really found that I fish more Simple maps then VE or Easy, but I do get more Easy then Moderate, and more Moderate then Difficult. Over the past year I have fished up about 5 VD maps and 1 ED map.

If you're 150 skill, cast your line, and happen on that rare Bottled Extremely Difficult Map, you just lost your bait and have nothing to show for it.

If you're max skill, cast your line, and happen on that rare Bottled Extremely Difficult Map, cha-ching.

I miss the "You spill your beer bringing in the line" message from the other game. Nice touch. I don't miss the rotten sandals, though.

In fact, IIRC, you need 250 mining plus the bonuses from some items to even have a chance at mining Deepmetal (there was a post about this at one point).

Off the fishing topic, but yes. You have to have both the prospector's satchel & the mining pick in order to get DM at all (nothing like the frustration of forgetting to swap your back slot out for 200+ rocks).
