Exp potions?

I bought one of those moderate experience potions from Thurgardin. I used 1 in a group, and according to the yellow text I am getting the same experience as my group members.

Does that item work?

And if so, is it reported in the yellow text detailing how much experience you gain?

Two times so far. Last night in HHK and today in BQ. Is there anything I can do to help it work?
