I was wondering if its possible to make a change to the 3rd leg of the Erudin shawl quest.
The batfur part was fun and the first shawl was a good reward, as was the 2nd part. A wizard friend and I (enc) did it together around level 30. A rogue got us into the basement for the tentacle and now we have our Mantle of the Senior.
My problem is with the part where you have to get the essences. I've seen water and earth for sale off of vendors, and found a couple earth myself while in a group. The wizard and I were able to duo the air elementals and get our essence of air. We did die once, so I don't see any changes needed here, the quest is hard enough that the reward is balanced.
But essence of fire is the bane of my existence. I've been told I have to be 50+ to get it, and others have told me its 50+ and in a group. Because it is used for tradeskills, nobody sells it.
We finished the first 2 parts of the quest in early September and have both been /auctioning for it ever since. The wizard has since left the game, but I'm still playing and looking for essence of fire. Whenever I auction for it, I either get no replies, or I get people telling me 'its deep in first ruins, you need a high level group".
The other day I saw someone offering 100plat for it and getting no offers.
The Elemental Mantle is a good piece, but by the time I reach a level high enough to get the essence of fire, I'll have upgraded to something much better. Maybe I just have horrible luck, but it's been two months and I've yet to get the essence of fire, and I've seen other people complaining too.
I won't ask to remove the fire from the quest, or to totally change Fire Elementals around, but I think there should be an easier way for people around 30 to do this quest without shelling out 100 plat and spending hours asking in /auc. Considering the other 3 essences sell for between 5 and 20, this is really expensive. But I know that price is because of the elemental level and the fact its used in tradeskills.
My suggestion would be a spawned NPC. You could stick him anywhere, maybe in Erudin or in a 30+ zone like the Air Elementals are in. The player could go to some NPC and ask them about the quest, maybe something like "Lady Niall sent me" and after they talk to you, either attack you or trigger a lower level, maybe 30-35 Fire Elemental or other NPC. He would drop a NO-DROP Essence of Fire so that it can only be used for the quest.
This would make the quest easier for people around level 30 who are doing it and allow them to complete it without paying more than they can afford or having to get someone of a higher level to help them. Making the NPC 30-35ish (I'm thinking a couple levels higher than Air Elementals) would keep the challenge there, but encourage grouping or duoing and make the quest possible for lower levels.
