What is the best way for me to go about this? Should I try to get tailoring up and make my own armor, or should i just try to get drops and sell stuff and buy leather armor from a vendor? I have found that it is hard to come by money and I am now 5th lvl and between buying spells for my shaman and a bag so I could carry more stuff I don't have any money for my 5th lvl spells now. (just finished getting the 1st lvl ones yesterday)

Any help with a direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and have a great day:)

Generally speaking, I've found it best to hunt low-level mobs that drop equipment.

I'm not so sure about the Newport area, but if you start in Oggok and get high-enough level to fight frogloks in Stinger's Bog, you'll start rolling in money since they drop a ton of stuff.

At low levels it seems tough to find armor and money, but just harvest some stuff from low level zones and sell it off. Snake scales, beetle eyes etc. are easy to get and you can make a little money for spells.

Armor will start dropping off things you fight soon. Leather anyway. All depends on what and where you fight.

Well i am about to try and enter blackburrow and hunt there, so i hope that will bring in cash and gear a little faster. So what your saying is that making my monk a tailor is a bad idea for someone of such a low level?

Personally, I wouldn't bother with buying cloth or leather armor. There are enough low level mobs that drop cloth and leather. Hunting the Ban Faru in Twilight Sea gave my chanter almost a full set of cloth armor (levels 7-12 I think). Now in Fearstone (13-16) - pulling the front few mobs has netted me several leather pieces that I sold off (since my chanter can't wear them).

I would leave tailoring for your monk - to work towards low weight items where you don't have dropped pieces. Don't expect to make very good armor anytime soon - to get your skill up will take some time and money.

Gnolls drop leather armor. You can kill the ones out front of blackburrow and get leather off them. Once you get up around level 12 or so...(if I remember) head into newport sewers via the secret wall in north newport. Gnolls in the sewers drop soft leather that's pretty decent for monks and casters alike.
