I do have this problem from time to time. It happens when the server is busy or when it's not. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes I have to try 2 or 3 times to get through. I think others might say to check your connection, or check this or that. But, in my experience, you just have to keep trying and you will eventually log in. After I do get to my character select screen I have no issues logging in, I just have problems going from server select to character screen. And, mine is a wired connection, WinXP machine with 4GB of RAM. I have just learned to live with it and have added it to the list of SoD "quirks".
Now, if you are not logging in at all, even after trying 3 or 4 times to get through, then it might have something to do with something else. Maybe a firewall setting that is stopping it from getting through.
