Early progression advice?

I was hoping I could get some suggestions on how to approach Dragon vs. Giant faction for a guild that's just entering the raiding game. Do the benefits of having more early tier raid targets by hitting both DHK and SK/SE outweigh the benefits of the gate necks, quest armor, etc.?

Black Hammer Mercenaries is about to begin raiding, and most folks haven't chosen a faction yet, so we'll be working with a blank slate. Is either approach a clear favorite? Is there any downside to killing on both sides of the fence that isn't readily apparent? Bear in mind that I haven't done any raiding since before 2.0 and before the changes to the gate necks, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have =)

Honestly there isn't too much point to closing yourself off from one of the zones until you are ready to upgraded the factioned armor, which will be long after you need the regular loots from those places. Raid both until you're done with killing both factions and then pick whichever you like afterwards.

Raid both. More options to help gear you up faster, I don't know how it is now but no one really used to kill giants all that much so you should always have something to raid if everything else is down, factioning is easy enough once you are ready to move on.

Yup, raid both, collect the heads for the aug pieces. In general, the upgraded factionbound pieces are not ridiculously better, so you're better off farming both factions. The ornate armor isn't too great either, for most pieces you would only bother getting it so you can get combine down the road.
