With the recent patch to thaz tower items many a melee class now sports an elegant facemask dangling from their ear.

If this change was indeed intentional, I'm failing to see where this item falls under the current facemask itemization.

Not intentional. The earring was originally a mask, but got changed. Somehow it got reverted back, but it'll be fixed soon.
