I joined this server a few days ago and I'm really amazed at the amount of work put into it. For the first time in years I felt like I was playing the old EQ again (I was in beta 3). Anyway one thing that I think would be cool from the older style RPGs that I never see in current MMORPGs is dungeons on a massive scale.
I had an idea of creating a dungeon that would have 20+ levels in it, each level would have multiple zone points to the next or previous levels. This would be very challenging for people as when they find a new zone point they could go up a level or down to the next level depending on what they find. I would also make each level more difficult than the previous and maybe every 5 levels have a boss or some sort of challenge/reward. At the end of the dungeon I would have a high boss requiring a full group of players to kill. This dungeon would not be designed for the casual lighthearted player, I would estimate it would take hours to go through this, although I would try to balance it to around 8 hours for a nicely geared group to finish it.
This style of dungeon would create almost mini-raid style system in my eyes. People would have to organize a full day dedicated to 1 group and the crawl through the dungeon. Almost a new style of raid, not focused on a lot of people but more of the duration. Because of the time involved the lowest levels would be visited the very least, and the highest levels will probably be hunted in by casual players.
At first this style of dungeon would be pretty challenging to the average player because of all the possibilities of zone connections, and thats a great thing. Eventually it would get mapped out and spoilers would be posted. However I think with the size/magnatiude involved in something like this would keep the lowest level hunting pretty scarce.
Since you guys are practically making your own zones (IE renaming and building old zones) you could use something like the LDON maps to achieve something like this, with at least 5 LDON maps per tileset you could link 2-4 of the tilesets together to achieve a dungeon like this.
