Decision Making

Hey there,
So this past week or so I have been trying to figure out what class I should play extensively. On Live I had a huge problem with making too many alts, so I was hoping to just pick a class after some sampling and just go with it. Then I decided that I should attempt to 2box, and it made it even harder for me to pick my characters.

Basically right now I have:
Beastlord- My highest level. Considering 2boxing with my Druid.
Wizard- Second highest level, probably my current favorite.
Monk- Pretty new, currently attempting to 2box with my Druid.
Druid- Attempting 2box w/ Monk.
Bard- New, but interested.

So I am here to ask whether or not it is essential to 2box. Honestly I think it is a lot more fun to poor my focus into one class/role and just do what I supposed to do. Is it possible to go far in this game with only one character? Or is it better if I just tough it out and play a Melee/Healer combo?

Boxing is up to you - it is not essential. It's a fact that it's advantageous to box in many situations, but it's not necessarily more fun. I boxed up until about 20, but as I'm more of a single-minded player, I decided to stop splitting the XP at that point. In fact, many players choose to level their main first, and then level their box afterwards as they have time.

Re: your lineup, a Druid makes a fine box for many combos. SoD appears to have pumped up Druids a bit since the last time I played EQ, so in addition to versatility and transportation, you also have access to solid heals. You also have Succor, which means you'll be able to box in dungeons with nearly 100% confidence. However, Wizards and Druids have a considerable amount of overlap, so consider that since you mentioned your Wiz was your favorite.

My advice to you would be to try and figure out what role and class you enjoy as your main. Then, if you decide you want to box, you can box a class that compliments your main. I probably wouldn't suggest Wiz/Dru. Wiz/Pal or Wiz/Clr? Sure.

well, it is possible to get really far with just one character but it's way harder while doing the general 1-65 thing. some people play two to a point (55-65 somewhere in there) and then drop the box and just play one. some play both all the way to 65 and beyond.

<< example for the "just one char the whole time" thing. It IS possible, and these people exist.

It is not essential to two box at all, You could solo a rogue to 65 with bind wound if you had enough devotion to doing it. However there are definitely sometimes when I remember that I simply felt I could never find a group(Specifically 30-40? maybe 50-60) and at these points the proposition of soloing sounded grueling and awful which got me to just boot up a 65 druid and power level my way to the finish.

Having that healer duo box or tank will definitely help at these points of player scarcity and will make forming your own group much easier, or you could just be antisocial as hell and do it alone.

Occasionally what you will see is people will 2-box to exp/gear themselves up until they can enter the raid game then pick one of the two characters to focus on up through the tiers. Be aware though that there will generally be more pressure on you to pick the healer for obvious reasons. If that is a problem for you the easy solution is to pretend you suck at healing or actually just suck at it.

ALSO the real solution is to force a RL friend into slavery playing one of your alts!!!

I have no alts over level 30. You can do it solo as a wizard, and you can get groups if you're pro-active. A wizard that knows how to use concussion efficiently is a great asset to any guild.

That said, I do love my wizard.
