The gameplay vid looks pretty neat. Seems like a mix of Doom 3 and Resident Evil 4, apparently you can only kill the monsters by dismembering them rather than just putting a bullet in their head. It's out on PC so I'm interested

Dead Space is a third-person survival horror-action video game, developed by EA Redwood Shores for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. The player takes on the role of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles a polymorphic, virus-like, alien infestation called the 'Corruption' which turns the crew members into 'Necromorphs', which are grotesque alien like creatures on board a stricken interstellar mining ship.[3] A sequel to the game is already in development.

Strategic dismemberment or whatever fancy word they came up with for it.. Apparently traditional "shoot in head" methods just make them mad.

i guess you can only create so many ways to shot something in the head and make it seem different from any other game.

Linked vid actually looks very slow and uninteresting until after 3 mins it gets somewhat interesting.
Looks promising in features, just hope that is the first level they are playing.

You don't have to strategically dismember them. You just have to cut off a minimum of 2 limbs. It's a pretty brutal game and totally worth checking out.

Played the xbox live demo and was impressed a lot. Very claustrophobic and stressful gameplay. Enemies come quick and your vision seems never enough to spot them before they are right on top of you. Was intense.

Friends were equally impressed by the demo, but after buying the game, they returned it due to disappointment.

It's tripe to be honest... It's slow, but while it tries to creep you out with mody music and dark halls, it simply fails at the pacing. You always see them monsters coming. The predictability of it all is a little sad...

I don't know, you might like it, you might not, I guess it depends on what you like in a game.
I regard it a bit like I did Doom. Sure it's dark and creepy, and yeah, the graphics are realistic enough for you to get caught up in it. But once you're past that initial shock, it's just more of the same all the time.

Most good horror games use story to keep you on edge, as they know that once you dismember your 50th monster in a short time, the fear effect rather vanishes.
It's only really scary, if you want it to be. You have to psyche yourself out a lot for it to keep that appeal.

If you're good at that, then I guess this is a game for you. If not, well... Don't expect much in the sense of story or plot to make things scarier. It's a dark first person shooter, where they moved the "head" to the sides, in the hopes of making things a little more challenging. But it never quite get's that "survival horror" feel it's so desperately trying to sell itself as...

Guess it's a decent time sink tho.

Something else I liked was that the menus projected in front of your character instead of pausing the game.

*spoilers*

I played through until chapter 10, downloaded some DLC for a better suit, weapons, etc..

...and lets just say apparently on xbox.com/tech reason for corrupt data is that every now and then DLC can mess up your files.

Long story short, deleted my save file... (I was so sad/angry)

...but then re-played through the whole game with just the Plasma-Cutter, and got the "One Gun" achievement, which was a lot more pleasurable and "achieving"! It was tough, but definitely fun.
