Day one from the eyes of a noob - Feedback

Gitsmo

Dalayan Beginner
Maybe I just didnt read enough although I tried. And on that note there really is a lot of info to get peopel started so it's not like I was thrown blidly into the world but I thought I'd give some feedback on all the pros and cons I ran into on my first day ever on an EMU shard.

First off, this shard has done a wonderful job of trying to spin it's own unique world. I know how work has gone into this and from what I've read it's been a round almost 2 years now? Amazing. Kudos and well done.

The quests are amazing good job. Lots of lore. And the zone map from the forums here color coded et al are priceless for the Dalaya noob like myself. The community was awesome and really it was an all round good solid fun day.

Some feedback:

The number one thing I had trouble with was getting my head around the uniqueness of the world. I kept thinking to myself I am in inothule or Cazic or whatever and I should be hunting XYZ for drops EFG etc. It turns out your zones are populated with your own mob selections and levels, and also an entirely unqiue loot table. Having a noob FAQ that explains in no uncertain terms (IE HEY YOU!! NOOB!! THIS IS NOT EQ - NUF ZED) was one thing that wouldve saved me a few extra questions in /ooc.

Exerpiencing EQ "for the very first time.. again" felt cool and towards the end of my first day I am much more comfortable with the world and the /ooc crowd has helped steer me towards some better goals for hunting and gear. We need more good noob guides definitely. I'll do my part once I have a few lvls under my belt and actually know what I am talking about.

One other bit of feedback is so far, the class quest (for my monk) are awesome risk vs reward.. Not overpowering at all but worth the 2 hours to pound through everything to get the rewards.. Something that I felt was lacking in EQ1.

Looking forward to the patch =) See you inside.

Thankfully the majority of quest's ive seen arent ridiculously long 24 day campout's or easy 2 minute , deliver these muffins to guard bixby type quests.

I also got that "Wtf is this" feeling , which is what i got when i first installed EQ back prior to kunark, which was good.

I like the feeling of being overwhelmed, it puts you in the sense of a true newbie, Even with all the backing of other mmo's ect.

Hello,

I just wanted to agree a bit with the OP / bump this little thread. Logging in for the first time was like an incredible breath of fresh air. Or, maybe just air I haven't breathed in a MMORPG in a while! I think I'll be here a bit :)

I only played for an hour or so, but so far it's great. Just have a quick couple of questions.

I just started a new rogue, and my guildmaster referred me to two npc's, and they didnt seem to be in the immediate area. No big deal, but, am I just missing somewhere or should I expand my search a bit?

Also, as a rogue, is there anything I really need to know about them besides what I know in live? Are there any huge differences in how they play that I should be paying attention to? I don't want to be a liability to any groups that I get in.

Thanks in advance for the help. Any of you high level backstabbers, please give me any advice you can think of!!

Rogues remain pretty much the same here, aside from one thing: styles. /s list to see which styles you have available and what levels you can use them. I haven't played a rogue here so I'm not sure exactly what you've got, but they definitely come in handy. Generally speaking, there are the 3 basic ones (normal, aggressive and defensive) which don't drain STA, then a variety of strenuous styles which slowly (or in some cases rapidly) use up your STA. When you run out you revert to normal stance. Finally, there are extreme stances which nuke all of your STA in one go and leave you exhausted for a little while (maybe 5 mins?). When exhausted, you have a harder time hitting mobs and they hit you more easily.

But yeah, aside from that I think you'll find rogue gameplay pretty much the same here as in live.

One difference to be aware of, though, is that weapon damage bonuses are now scaled to a weapon's delay. Thus your DPS is going to be the same with a 10/20 weapon as with a 15/30 weapon, all else equal. Aggro will be lower with the slower weapon. Thus it's to your great benefit to get a high damage weapon. It'll give you stronger BSes like on Live, but you won't be sacrificing any basic non-BS DPS.

Speaking as a rogue, aggressive stance will be your most stalwart friend. As long as you have a tank of comparable level with comparable weapons, you will not be getting much aggro even in aggressive stance, provided judicious use of evade. If however, you are left in the lamentable position where you are simply grabbing too much aggro (be it subpar tank weaponry or lower level) you should use the shadow stance (I believe it is /s 4). This stance drains VERY little stamina, but greatly reduces (%25, which is pretty huge) the hate you produce from any action. Most of the time you can just use it for the first 15 seconds of the fight (the minimum required to switch stances) and then switch back to aggressive for the remainder of the fight. This will allow you to use the stance pretty much every fight without running out of stamina. Thus, you can avoid the always irritating aggro ping-pong associated from too much dps.

Thanks alot for the tips!

I will definitely check out the stances when I log back in. Heck, it actually sounds like a rogue is more fun to play on Dalaya than on live :)

One other stupid newbie question:

Once I hit three and learned hide, I began dilligently practicing it and sneak to build up my skills. I'm getting skill-ups on both abilities, but it doesn't seem to be giving me any feedback as to whether I was successful or not. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've actually snuck successfully once yet (I haven't slowed down after going into sneak).

Do these abilities work the same as in live?

No matter what I am doing I still have flashbacks from Live. Like when I run from N Newport to Centuar Hills .. I still miss killing Flippy Darkpaw.

Would I go back, hell no! SoD is a better server hands down. Way to go guys!

Obviously, you have never camped Barbtail (twice!).

Yes, I'm bitter.

***edit***
To stay on topic...

When I first started playing, I remember taking the coachmaster (when they were still here) to Freeport and seeing it overrun by skeletons. I then went to East Plaguelands thinking it would be like the old East Commons from live. The puma that was a very red con told me it was nothing like Live EQ.

The true pain is when you think "Aw, I loved Kelethin on live, that was my home" and decide to go up the lift for a visit. "A tendril of mist? I've never seen....."
