I was having a bunch of problems with my laptop and decided to reinstall windows. When looking to reinstall SoD, I wondered if it is now acceptable (and will work) to download the F2P client and then SoD patcher. I own the Anniversary Edition, but it’s on CD and I would prefer to just download the client, if acceptable.

Thanks.

Well I downloaded the F2P client and then patched with the SoD patcher and the game ran fine once. I went back to play again and got this error:

"EverQuest was unable to initialize the file EQMAIN.DLL."

This is on a laptop with fresh install of windows and nothing else but Steam and virus software downloaded. Anyone have an idea of what this could be?

Delete EQmain.dll (in the main folder) and repatch. try that a couple times, if it doesnt work.. delete it, restart, and repatch.

I used to get this a lot 2 boxing, iirc something about EQW corrupting it... ended up making 2 directories, one for each box.

Just tried this a few times. Deleted the EQmain.DLL from the main folder. Patched to Live then SoD again and keep getting the same error. Also deleted the file and just patched to SoD.

I'm pretty annoyed at this point. Can anyone else help?

I've also tried with binding to a processor. Still getting the same error.

Windows 7 64 bit.
Intel I5
Nvidia gt555m
6 gigs ram

I figured out the problem, but don't have a fix. This is an Alienware laptop with optimus technology. You are able to select what GPU each program uses to render graphics. When I pick the integrated graphics the game loads fine, but it pretty choppy since it's just a basic GPU. As soon as I pick for the program to run through the Nvidia gt555m that error pops up when I open shards.

I guess it's a driver issue since I've played SoD on this laptop for over a year. Any other tips to get around this issue?

If that is the case, can you make sure you have the most up to date drivers? If you are using the most up to date, can you roll back a driver? During live I actually had to roll back graphics drivers a few times :(

Well, I had been using the most up to date driver from Dell's site, but I guess there was something buggy about that driver. I got the current one from Nvidia and then bound to one processor and it worked like a charm.

Thank you everyone who responded for the help!

I removed a few posts. It seems there was a bit of a misunderstanding between a couple posters, but prior to that, the thread is a good one. I hope the "it was a driver thing and all is well now" status is still in effect!
