Crashing, but not quite?

Alright, lemme try to explain this properly here...

First off EQW doesn't seem to work at all for me - I hit play, it brings up a little window, does a resolution shift (screen goes black), then just crashes with no errors or anything.

So - I decided to forgo the use of EQW and just run in regular mode. Works fine (mostly) able to log in, get to the server screen.

At the server screen, I'll click play - It'll shift resolutions again (down to like 640) and show a portion of the desktop....and just sit there. EQGAME.EXE is still running - however it sits at 50% CPU Usage, and an unchanging (usually 22k to 23k) Ram usage, and just sits there - no changes, no fluctuations. I should point out that while EQgame.exe is running, there is no program running for EQ or SoD in the Programs portion of the Task Manager.

I've tried setting affinity to either/both CPUs, changing various screen resolutions, changing windowed mode to TRUE in the client.ini, etc.

I'm at a loss for what to do at this point. If anything, it seems like it's some kind of video issue.

I run with two monitors, however i've tried deactivating one and it still has the same issue, except instead of showing the desktop, it just basically freezes on the server screen, and gives you desktop mouse control (I.E. the In game cursor is there, but when you move the mouse its the normal pointer)

System Specs - Pentium Core 2 Duo, 3 gigs of ram, Radeon HD 4600 with 1gig on board. Windows XP
Fully up to date on drivers, etc.

Any ideas guys?

I've also reinstalled and repatched at this point, still no luck.

I should also ad that playing on other EQEMU servers from a seperate installation works fine.

I think this will help this same deal happened to me before.

What caused it was changing my in game resolution.

I had my resolution set to 16 bit in game and 32 bit on my desktop. They both didn't jive so it caused the hang up. It would just sit there with the black screen forever.

So check to make sure they are both either 16 or 32 bit. You can change it in your cfg file or in your options before logging into the game.

I'm pretty sure this will fix your problem.

Just make sure your resolution and the bit is set the same. Chances are with your setup it's going to be 32 bit and whatever resolution your monitor is rated for.

As someone who has worked in Tech Support for years, no figuring this out is frustrating the HELL out of me. It has something to do specifically with SoD and the way it interacts with my hardware I think, because like I mentioned, I can log onto random other EQEMU servers just fine from my second installation (same Hard Drive).

does your client meet a minimum of titanium? If so is it fully patched? If so did you open the ports you need? there are like 10 ports that you need...

I'd try with no firefall no antivirus, no everything, and full privilages. That should work.
I mean eqw not working means something is wrong, since you're running xp. sod itself even works on my integrated video card pc.

Yes its titanium, no firewall or anything is ever running, no closed ports, it's not something that simple unfortunately.

okay, seriously...no one to help?

I really want to play - someone somewhere has to have some Idea.

Hello Devs? Anyone? Wiz?

Some further info for you guys:

SoD worked fine on this comp, with this installation disc BEFORE my recent upgrades to dual-core and the new ATI card. Further showing it's something hardware.

I've included this nifty image in the hopes that someone will get a better idea and with it a !lightbulb! XD

Pleeease help a brotha out

edit: More info - Have tried running at every resolution possible, with and without dual monitors. Have also downgraded ATI drivers, and also UPgraded to most recent drivers. Have updated DX9.0c, etc.

i'm completely at a loss at this point.

Your dbg.txt shows no errors at all, so that's pretty much useless.

2 Obvious things to try:

1. Delete your eqclient.ini and load up the game again.
2. Delete your custom UI you might be using with your character and try the game again with the default UI.

1 Possible obscure option:

1. Turn off DEP or set eqw.exe and eqgame.exe to be allowed.

DEP is inside the Advanced tab of your system properties page, under Performance click Settings, then click the DEP tab.

I've done the ini thing several times - going so far as to import the ini from a working client (just to check, why not?) - no avail.

No custom UI's - just the default.

DEP already set to windows processes only.

No clue then, must be something with your specific machine though. Check what other processes are running, disable anti virus, see if Windows Firewall is blocking the ports, or see if another app you are running is using some of the same ports.

If you're running bit torrent, turn it off as it can be a bandwidth hog for your upstream.

Don't have an antivirus installed at all, nor any Windows AV/Firewalls running. No extra processes, etc (i'm a performance whore).

Looks like I'm not gonna be able to play SoD :/

All the private servers blow except the ONE i can't play on :(

What video setting are you using? What video card? Can you set your eq video mode to match whatever normally starts up for eq? Take a look at settings in the eq startup system and make sure it's got one your video card can use.

i had the same problem as the op i had to chance my resolution settings, from the last one onm list to the 3rd one and works fine

ATI Radeon HD4600 with 1gig ddr3 VRAM
Core 2 duo E7400 2.8gHz dual-core processor

I've tried every resolution my monitor can handle, from 800x600 up to 1280x1024. I've used the options manager to set every combination of video resolution and graphics options (texture caching, models, etc).

No combination has netted any different results.

As always - Ill select the server, click play, and it freezes on the SoD server screen. The game cursor is frozen on the play button, and I gain control of the normal hardware cursor - It shows the hardware cursor (normal white mouse arrow) - however it's technically 'behind' the SoD server select screen. Any clicking does nothing. Hitting CTRL ALT DELETE is the only way to close it/tab out of it. Looking at the Task Manager shows you what I showed in the screenshot above - The process EQGAME.EXE is running, at 50% CPU Usage, and a non-changing amount of ram usage, and though the PROCESS is running, there is no 'the game' running in the Programs tab. It seems hitting play attempts to launch the game, but the process is getting stuck somehow.

i think this might help

ive had somewhat a problem like that only thing is the button would not work
what i reccomend doing is hovering the cursor over the play button and pressing Enter
this acts as if you pressed the buton
im thinking some of the buttons on ther are bugged a bit
just give that a try and let me know if that helps

ATI cards are known to have problems with EQ. You might want to try a different driver.

no fix for this? i'm having the exact same problems.

SOD worked fine for weeks then all of a sudden last night this exact problem where the game freezes on the server select window when I click the PLAY button.

I've reinstalled EQ and nothing.

Repatched and nothing.

Everything else is up to date.

if i run EQ SOD without EQW it works.

I've downloaded the newest EWQ and tried that and it didn't work.

i'm just gonna try to wipe everything from my computer and start totally from scratch including going into the registry and dicking around.
