crashing after char creation

I've found this in one other post. After I make my character the game either crashes back to windows or freezes. When it freezes, it takes about 5 minutes of doing the ctrl alt delt salute to make anything happen. In the other post I saw someone recommend replacing the UI files. I did this and still nothing. Any other ideas? Please help... being so close to being able to play is driving me crazy.


EDIT: I dunno if this will help. I wasn't sure how much of this information you need, so I tried to keep it to the first part I saw something about a crash. I could post more before this but it was EXTREMELY long.

With all the reinstalling/repatching I did I am not sure what I did to fix my problem. But, make sure you follow every direction exactly. Also note, do not repatch back to live after patching WRpatcher.

The new hotfix file Wiz made has all the UIfiles you need.

One thing to try is to delete the help folder, and the uifiles folder. Then put the hotfix UIfiles and Help folder in the EQ folder.

Then run the WRpatcher and see what that does.

Duktak's problem is crazy... tried everything I had under my hat but he still have problems after character creation...He told me had 500Mhz P3, 384Mb, GF2MX, I guess it's enough since I know a few people with this kind of configuration...looks a bit like the black screen of death after character selection, but I'm clueless about the remedy.

Yeah. I always launch through the patcher.

EDIT: Now when the game is crashing at the char creation screen, it's giving me an option to send some information to the devs. I checked no this time cause I wasn't sure if it would get sent to the WR devs or the Sony devs. Can anybody tell me which one it will get sent too? Maybe if I can send that info to WR somebody can help me with a solution... Also, in an unrelated issue, I can't get to the irc. I always get "this page can not be displayed." From what I understand, irc should be working fine and is always up. Anybody else having trouble with it, or a possible sollution? If it's not one thing, it's another.

About IRC did you install a client ?
Visual IRC is free but never used it ... http://www.visualirc.net/beta.php
or MIRC which can be used without registering it : http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Just install one of these and specify a nickname in the software. Then go to WR webpage and click IRC link, it should launch the client and put you right into the server.

I would check your video card drivers, make sure they are up to date with what sony recommends.

They say on that page they support all cards down to geforce 1 so I would think the card is ok, maybe just drivers.

Try defragging harddrive after you uninstall, then reinstall eq and the wrhotfix and patcher. Could also try scandisk after the defrag.

When you want to play eq I would recommend restarting so the computer is fresh and nothing game related is resident in memory. This is what I do and have not had any problems since. I always restart before I want to play eq.

I am pretty sure the client version you want is the older one from 2003 though. Since that is what the WRpatcher patches it to. I could be wrong, but I can't check what mine is since I am at work.

Only thing I can recommend after this is making sure you followed all the steps and turn all the graphics down to minimum.

To Assertor: Thanks. Never used irc before and didn't realize I needed to download a client. Works like a charm now.

To Desythe: I've been using a few different video drivers due to a known issue with the nvidia mx line of cards with EQ. It causes the game to turn red and polygons to flash while in the game. I was still able to connect to the Sony servers with this going on, it would just happen randomly while in game and then I'd be forced to reboot before it would work properly again. I'm going to talk to the Sony reps again this week about a fix for that because Nvidia are a bunch of rotten bastards and offer absolutley NO customer support at all. :censored: But I'm not bitter. Someone from Sony had already started telling me about a fix for it, but I was at my work computer and he needed some driver info I didn't know off hand. So hopefully that will get fixed soon. I just defraged earlier today actually and I think I will try to go ahead and reinstall EQ once again. This will make attempt number 3 at that. I already have the graphics turned down to minimum with only the human and wood elf models selected. The sound is the only other option I have turned on.

A small refresh...I heard Duktak still can't log into the server, I think the Client version matter mentioned earlier might be the right thing, but how can we change this ? Is there something special to do when installing from the 1.3G file of EQtrilogy instead of original CDs ?

Fixed the problem. Thanks everyone who helped, especially Assertor and Wany. If anyone else who is having this problem reads this thread, make sure you're unzipping the hotfix to the EQ folder in program files. I was confused and unzipping it to my WREQ folder I made in my documents. Boy, do I feel like a braindead asshole.
