CPU overheating?

A short while ago I reinstalled AI suite on my Asus Board

I also reinstalled SoD using the Sony download in an attempt to defeat the crashing bug which seems to selectively affect players.

For the past few weeks AI has been alerting me to high CPU temperatures when boxing. 72-74C. I know that this is a known issue with EQ.

I reinstalled the fan on the CPU (Intel Sandy Bridge 2500) with fresh heat paste to no avail. The fan is rotating at the correct speed and was installed correctly when I removed it and seems to be working normally now.

It then occurred to me about the use of the Sony download and I reinstalled today with the titanium edition files which I used previously.

Just before the reinstall today I noticed a reported temp of 82C.

Since the reinstall the temperatures seem a little better though it did touch 72 once.

So my thoughts are that:

This may have been a chronic issue that was exacerbated by using more modern files or,

The sensor on the CPU may be faulty at extremes as it is currently reporting a CPU temperature of 27-28C which seems infeasibly low when the motherboard is at 31C.

I have tried EQ playnice but understand that it doesn't work too well with 64 bit Win7

Can anybody advise me of similar issues and their experiences or thoughts on what is happening.

Do you play on a laptop? High temperatures on a laptop are not unheard of. Honestly, unless my rig gets close to 100c and the same with my laptop. I have never had a computer crap out due to heat issues.

Nope this is a standard midi tower config with an Antec case

I agree that temperature sin the 70s are not likely to be immediately harmful but they could shorten the life of the processor if they get into the eighties

If the heatsink is functioning correctly, and you are still getting high temps, you need a better heatsink. Some main boards have options to help with temperature control of the processor (so you might have some options here), but the best temp control is a good heatsink. If you start encoding videos, you are going to use way more processor time than EQ, and temperature is going to be a real problem.

I would look for a better heatsink. For temp control, liquid cooled systems are much better than air cooled systems. The downside is cost.

Also, if you are overclocked, go back to the stock speed...

Good luck.
