constant crashing

Lots. Most depend on your system, your ISP, etc. Try the stickies, including posting info other than I'm broke, use your Jedi mind skills to find out what's wrong, fix me?

It's not like I want you to come to my house and fix it for me. I'm just looking to be pointed in the right direction because I don't know a terrible lot about computers. I don't know what else to say other than what I said in my original post, that's the only issue I'm having and I really don't know how else to put it.

let's give this a good start by asking one important question:

does it give you any error messages?

Same problem I think

My problem sounds the same, I have just started SoD and it works except for this one annoyance. Whenever I load a zone, be it the character select screen, or zoning in game, at the point where the file bar is about to move I am dumped to the **** disclaimer screen, then the connect menu. This happens about 80% of the time.

I have an AMD 4 core CPU with the game bound to core 1,
4GB RAM,
Win Vista Home Basic,
Nvidia 9600GT with drivers about 7 months old (anything newer makes all my games crash to desktop, not sure what's up with that but with these drivers everything else is working fine),
DirectX updated as of 2 weeks ago,
EQ1 and EQ2 both run flawlessly.

I am not sure exactly where to start looking for problems.

Feetfirst, you can start by describing your machine, it's age, stats, video card, memory, then describe which version of the game you installed and when you did it, as well as whether you did a real install or just copied it over from another computer.

Next, how long have you been playing SoD with that set up? Did you just install the game and start playing here, and it's been happening since day one? Or have you been playing for a year and suddenly your client start crashing last week.

Did you play on another emu with that set up, or on Live?

Is your computer having other problems, outside of playing SoD? Did you recently upgrade any parts to your computer or have someone do it? Did you recently update any software on it and what?

Did a more computer savvy friend work on your computer recently for you, updating things or increasing the speed of the machine for you?

See, there's about a million possible problems that could cause crashing, and you didn't read the stickies that tell you what to include in your request for help, so there's no way we can help until you do.

We could just randomly tell you to try things, like reinstall and see if that helps, if you want.

It's a Dell Inspiron 1525
Intel core duo 2.00 ghz
3 gigs ram
32 bit vista

I haven't played on nay other emu server and I have used this computer for live before. The computer hasn't been used by anyone but me and I haven't changed any settings or attempted to upgrade anything. There are no other issues outside of the SoD crashing. I just started playing SoD within the last week and it has been an issue from the start.

Which version of the game do you have? which expansions?

How old is the computer? Did you buy it new 3 months ago with Vista or did you buy it 2 years ago with XP and upgrade it to Vista?

So far not getting much of an idea of what could be wrong.

Are you on a dial-up account? Cable modem? Are you in Europe, the USA, Canada, or where? If you press F11, you should see a lag bar at the top left of your client window. Are the numbers low or high?

You could try reinstalling the game, or repatch all.

How long between crashes do you get to play? Are you getting Packet Loss (the f11 bar will go to red)? That happens if you've been in a zone over an hour. The fix for that is to /cmd refresh if you've been in a single zone for an hour. It only re-zones you so that you can play another hour in that zone. It won't correct it if you're experiencing packet loss.

Ive had the computer for about a year-year and a half and it came with vista on it already. I'm using EQ platinum, I'm using cable modem, I'm in the US, the lag bar is always in the corner and generaly is at zero aside form the occasional lag spikes. As long as I don't die or zone I won't crash. I can play for as long as I like as long as I dont leave the zone or get killed. Packet loss was explained to me in game by another player and I dont believe that's it because I can log on and go to another zone immediately and I'll crash. I've reinstalled and repatched several times but still have the same issue.

Zone dc's and crashes may indicate there's a problem with your system. Sometimes a crash or dc can be traced to a timing issue. If some packets arrive out of order or delayed, it can cause that.

Check if you have any spyware or virus running on your machine. Check if you've got anything like norton doing a packet check. (if you've got Norton anti-virus, that *might* be a problem. It inspects each packet.) Possible other causes could be your system is constantly going out to get updates or do backups.

Check if you've got other applications running. Check to make sure you've got the client running only on a single cpu. (instructions on how to do that are in the sticky threads.)

Check if your machine is overheating. Overheating can cause crashes. Are your machine's fans running ok? Is there a lot of dust in the PS fan?

Another problem has come up. I still get the crashes but now it's like the game is moving is super slow motion. My character moves slow, my pet, I cast slower, it goes slower when I go to loot, open doors, every aspect of the game is slow now. I dont have norton or anything like that running and my computer isn't overheating.

EDIT - the slow issue has been resolved but I'm still crashing out when zoning/ on death

Do you run ANY other cpu and disk intensive application at all? Or is this the only thing you run that takes as much cpu?

I'd suggest getting some testing programs to check out your machine. It's a good possibility that you've either got a hardware problem or a driver problem.

**EDIT: I haven't tried zoning, but last play session I died in the same zone I was bound a few times (yay for being a newb ;) and I loaded just fine. I have changed nothing since the below, so perhaps is WAS just intermittent connection issues. Will keep informed!**

**EDIT 2: nevermind. I crashed out at least 8 times tonight. Twice while zoning when trying to organize a raid group. got so fed up with it I just turned the thing off. still no real idea why.**

I've been gone awhile, but just started two new toons. been having the same issue on a fresh install and patch of titanium. I've used this system in the past for SoD with no issues before. no other system-intensive things are running.

I've had it happen in both the various Newport and Halas city and newbie zones, so it's almost definitely something on my end.

whenever I need to load a new zone (zoning or death) I "crash out" to the opening screens and need to log back in, choose the server again, and log back into the character. It has happened almost, if not every, time.

the only thing I can think of is possibly the sometimes horrible wireless connection here and I am possibly timing out when loading a zone. but I find it strange it happens every (or almost every) single time - the connection shouldn't be THAT bad. it also never happens while I am in a zone. the only way I could think to test this is if there is some client-side way I could increase the timeout period and see if that resolves it. any other thoughts?

I am at a loss! but it is obviously super annoying. I'm glad I haven't tried grouping yet, because having to reform a group on every zone and/or death would REALLY suck.

thanks for any insight!
