Concerning link-flagged text

To solve my bardless boredom I decided to check if yee old method of making 'Socials' button text look like a link carried over to Shards of Dalaya. Seeing as it's all clientside it worked suitably for a minor demonstration, though I can't find any way to divine the actual item codes without doing something definitively beyond the rules. I asked if the practice was frowned upon and had uncertain, generally disapproving replies. A GM instructed me to ask about it on the forums.

Is making in-game text look like this illegal? There's no serverside manipulation, no data mining and nothing particularly obtrusive (unless one chooses to see it as such). If someone is using illegal methods to put an actual link behind it they could quickly be spotted and excised. It's quite easy to do, although I can't access the .ini file without logging out of the game and shutting down my client so it's somewhat cumbersome. In fact if it proves acceptable I'll gladly share the necessary prerequisite on the forums since it's fun and fun should be shared :D

If not we can all forget about it and peacefully go on our merry way.

If you make a fake item link (a link where the name and ID do not match up) the game will kick you out and brand your account with a hack mark.

So don't do that.

That solved that... almost --

It's possible to make an item link that simply doesn't exist. The server wouldn't display an item at all, it would just make the name look purple and 'clickable' but wouldn't actually link an item. If you don't want that to happen you may need to alter the code to recognize the possibility.

If what you don't want is the wrong *link* behind the wrong *text*, would it be acceptable for people to make text look like a link but not really work?

Making any kind of link that's not a proper one will result in the above.

By the way, I had no idea it wasn't allowed. You may want to note it in the documentation as the practice was tolerated on Live servers.

Since when? They kept putting out patches making it harder and harder to manipulate links... would assume that means they dont like it.

I think those patches were meant to stop data mining via links. I never tried to "crack" the database of items but found that creating the fake link to %Target was an excellent way of alerting the group/raid on pull msgs and /assist calls.
