Computer Woes

Well, finally I got onto a computer to explain why I've been missing.

No, I'm not playing Planetside, and no, I haven't found some uber satisfying real life hobby. My computer, which was the only one for miles with all the EQ files on it, commited suicide.

The wire that runs from the power supply to the motherboard, melted itself to the motherboard. It's pretty nasty.

It all started when I tried to get on WR about 6 days ago, right when I started feeling good again. The loading screen came up, and I started smelling something like burning plastic. Before 15 seconds, the monitor went black, my computer beeped at me, and it wasn't responding to anything but a reboot.

I thought it was the video card, so I pulled it out, checked it and found nothing. Put it back in, and tried again. This time, the moment I pressed Run on the WR patcher, it black screened. It didn't smell like burning plastic this time, so I thought nothing of it.

For a whole day I tried new and old drivers, replacing ram, different monitors, and every once in a while, that burning plastic smell would come up, but I couldn't see where it was coming from.

Each time I turned on the computer, it seemed to black screen 30 seconds earlier then before, until eventually, I would turn on the computer, and it would black screen right away.

This is when I got pissed and just pulled EVERYTHING out of the case, which revealed the problem.

I don't know how I missed it before, but the whole "plug in" part of the wire that hooks into the motherboard, from the power supply, was brown, and melted to the prongs that it connected to.

Now I'm left with a broken mobo, messed up power supply, and a crappy ass computer that can barely run Warcraft 2, which isn't even mine.

So, it's going to cost a fair bit to get a new motherboard, and power supply, and I might just buy a whole new computer to skip any crap with fixing that one.

It could be a week or a month before I get back on, and I barely get a chance to use THIS computer. If GotW needs to use Taledarien, just PM me on these forums. I'll try to check it at least once a day.

Well, I know I'm going to miss a horde of things, and believe me it sucks, but I just wanted to let you all know what was going on.

Good luck all, *sighs*

A shame you have to buy now. Let me explain:

Before the year is over (Q3 maybe?) many of the following will be available:

PCI express/ PCI x 16 graphics cards (double AGP bandwidth)
BTX form factor
Athlon 64 4000 / 939 pin Athlons (means current a64's will be dirt cheap)

If AMD isn't your bag, Intel should have something competitive out by then.

Granted, some people are willing to settle for cheaper stuff, so maybe none of this matters to you. However, as AGP and PCI will be phased out over the next few years, it would be a shame to spend all of that money when the new crop is SO close to being released.

A little food for thought; like I said, it may or may not matter at all to you at all, but at least you have been informed (in case you hadn't already been!)
