Comparison between games

Hey there, new player here. I played EQ starting in May 1999 and up to the time EQ2 was released (with some definite gaps of inactivity in there). EQ in it's original days was awesome, I'm happy to have found something that may be around the same quality.

I was wondering about the differences in the classes between EQ back at about Luclin era and Shards of Delaya.

From what I've gathered:

1. Water pets now have a small snare (this excites me)
2. Druids heal better?
3. Rangers are better with Bows
4. Paladins are better in general
5. Mesmer charms are no longer as effective

What else is different in SoD?

Yes, I saw that, but it doesn't really cover everything. I assume many spells have been changed/added. Mainly I'm just wanting to understand the changes to the classes as best I can so that I can decided what I would have most fun playing.

Ooph, can't edit my post. I hate spelling mistakes.

Hmm...I think I'm wanting to know more about balance? For example, into the 50's, a lot of casters became really crappy at higher levels. Melee DPS was far superior and Magicians/Necros/Wizards only had a couple little tricks that ever made them useful. Druids were just laughed at.

I love those classes so I'd really like to know if they are effective at most levels, not just the lower-mid ones.

There is SO much that is different that to try to nutshell the overall balance situation in the way you are requesting would be simplistic and uninformative.

Here's the best I can do: "No classes are useless."

Other than that, getting in game and realizing the scope of customization that exists here and completely immersing yourself into it without a "this is how it is/was on Live" mindset is really the only effective way to understand it. To that end, don't plan on your first character being your main. It's not unreasonable to think that you'll make a character, begin to understand these things you're asking, and decide you really don't want to play the class you are playing.

If you can get over the "compare to Live" mentality, you'll love it here!

Cool, thanks!

I basically want to play every caster (except Cleric), lol. I was trying to narrow it down but I don't think that will happen.

I've played a ton of Mages on live because of server hopping and so I sorta didn't want to do that again, but I do LOVE the class so I think I'll do that along with a Druid (I like mobility).

for some reason i thought that heals got +5% in the day and -5% at night, not +10% during the day and 0% at night?

would make the Vah "no night healing penalty" kinda useless also?

Semantics. Heals are adjusted by 10% in the day compared to what the Parser tells you they heal. Vah get that adjustment at night as well. If you consider this a heal bonus during the day, or a heal penalty at night is really a matter of opinions.

Dunno if this has any influence at your decession at all, but if you plan to raid, the most neded casters seem to be clerics, druids, wizards, and to some degree, mained enchanters.

Maybe...but I mostly want to immerse myself in a great fantasy world and have fun. My bf is going to play too so I'm also trying to figure out a strong 4-person team for the long run. Can't have a Necro or SK, though, he won't allow it with the way he roleplays. He doesn't like people who magically manipulate minds either so Enchanter is out as well (although I'll probably have an alt enchanter, I love that class).

Since I've decided on Mage and Druid, I was thinking Paladin and Shaman for him. Paladin will be an easy melee class for him to learn the game with and the Shaman shouldn't be too hard to 2-box since it can easily contribute with buffs, downtime healing, and DoTs.

Also, I still can't figure out why it says I'm a guest. I tried to register again and it said the name was already taken, so I re-set the password and logged in again. *shrug*

New Rule With "WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?!?!?!" posts.

If you ask a question and get an answer you need to put it in the wiki :hmpf:

Welcome to SoD btw!

Mage is pretty honestly fairly lackluster, especially with a druid. If you really want a well rounded team, replace the mage with a monk.

I'd say wizzy instead of a monk, (both are very good DPS though) I say this for two reasons.

1. since your interested in finger wagglers.
2. Ports are nice.

Early on Roots for CC will work, even later on in some zones.

for the most part druid can probably port everywhere wizard can or pretty close, same for the roots. Not that wizard would be a bad choice or anything, just wouldnt bring anything "new", like monks FD pulling. If you think you'll do a lot of tmaps a rogue would be nice, but you can bash pretty easily up to mods anyway. Or a Bard, if he'll let you.
