Cleric Box

Dalayan Beginner
So I've been having a good time with my necro+mage box. Just got into the 30's with them and I'm currently exploring Kaladim.

But now I want to start leveling a healer alt. Reading over the forums, it seems Clerics are still the way to go if I want to see the grouping game.

So, what’s a good box for a cleric? I almost considered Druid for the combined utility, but I think leveling dual priest's would be really painful on a low pop server. I'd go back to my Shadowknight, but I want more dps. I played a Monk for years, but they require a lot of button mashing to get decent dps out of them.

So I'm thinking either Beastlord or Ranger, with the Ranger slightly in the lead.

Ranger
  • They have a taunt key
  • Track
  • Fewer buttons to push during melee combat.
  • If I get a group, he can be parked to one side and put on /autofire.
But fletching. How is that here? I’m willing to put in hours mindlessly figuring out the spawn system in a dungeon, but I’m not too keen on old school EQ trade-skilling. I remember carpal tunnel from moving one each of 5 items into a container and hitting combine. That’s a big nope. Is trade-skilling avoidable?

Beastlord
  • Manna buffs and slow.
  • Pet helps a lot for boxing.
  • Perhaps more group utility.
But they seem to need more button pushing. Also, no taunt key.

Thought I'd throw this out and see what you guys think. Thanks for opinions.

Do yourself a favor and don't duel box priests. It sucks, and you will give it up quickly.

A few people will disagree, but trades kills here suck bad. Just buy your arrows on list sold.

It really depends if you're talking about leveling up 1-65 or doing stuff at 65.

For 1-65, I'm not 100% sure but I think ranger melee is better than bowing until you get some important AAs. Overall, the ranger vs bst is pretty similar. I'd recommend going with the ranger to have a top tier tracker to your assortment of chars.

For the 65 game, rangers are more useful/desired for raids, as well as probably more useful in general but also the whole fletching thing is kind of a drag.

Ranger>>> Bst.
Better tanking (if needed), better dps, same gimp heals, tracking, dmg shield is better than slow, and later on will score groups easier. The bst pet is nice, especially at low levels, but as you level, the ranger will easily overtake the bst/pet combo. As for the button pushing, until you have a pile of clickies to help with dps, casting during melee combat is mostly a dps loss, actually, so bst have little.
So, after you chose ranger, do yourself a favor and get the xbow off the Haunted Treant, once you level to that point. Because a) it looks awesome, and b) its end stats are pretty good, so it will save you some cash later, until you get a raid drop bow.

I'm mostly talking about leveling up to 65. So he'll be pulling and tanking 90% of the time.

I imagine that even sub 65 level, /autofire should be good enough for the once in a blue moon that I find another duo to hook up with and I'm focusing on healing with the cleric.

My only real concern is that everyone else is duoing with some sort of pocket healer. Guess I'll find out how useful a main cleric/ranger box is.

to give you an idea:
My 65 mains are Cle/Ran,about t8/9(?). - Uland/Meldurh
Places I am comfortable with to box - things like Remnants Crocs (Quickstream camp),Rust, large portions of Murk faction stuff, deeper parts of MielC,ToLL camp and the like.
Places I CAN box (all borderline,I rather not box these)- Highkeep 2,3,Eld's key dropper for Cata(he hits for ~700),Undead Caves in Remnants(double pulls, mobs summon, hit for ~350)
Places I CANNOT box or tank - everything above :) - seriously, things like Kaesora,Bloodquarry, not to mention Citadel or such are way out of my Ranger's league(even with a group I guess).

Generally I NEVER tank in a group, there are so much tanks around it simply isnt needed.
Overall I'm happy with my Cle/Ran box (since they introduced autofire :) ).
Only thing really annoying is the handling of (theoretically) *15* different but identical looking bane bows/quivers/arrows.I keep that at a minimum like using construct bane arrows on Rust raids
or undead bane arrows in Catacombs.Nice thing about is you always have a good excuse why you cant main loot. :)

I suggest using a bst/ranger with a paladin or shadowknight, not a cleric or druid, unless you plan on duoing T3 nameds when you're 65 and have good gear.

Well, you see, the entire thing was based on the idea of having a cleric main...

I do like soloing named. It's why my Shadowknight is getting some love at the moment. For dps RNG > SHD, but is the difference big enough? For tanking SHD >> RNG. RNG probably still wins as a box, since if I ever do get involved in end game (god forbid), a ranger will slot in better than an undergeared SHD. But that may not be an issue, since for end game I'm not a willing boxer.

I had one guy tell me that CLR+MAG was the way to go, but I highly doubt my mage pet could hold agro over cleric heals. My mage is level 36 right now. When my cleric hits that level I'll box them together and see what happens.

zapple played cleric mage and is one of the top 5 coolest dudes/best players so i'm gonna assume it is an okayish combo

Zapple could have played pretty much anything though.

Pure caster + cleric is a pretty good and under appreciated duo, in my opinion. I play a necromancer from time to time, so I may be biased.

I play mage/clr all the time and I like it. Pets aggro might not be always the best thing at least on multi pulls and I usully end up tanking with mage. Just heal harder if that happens (and get heal aggro for clr) :)
