Class advice

Newb here ... hi :)

I've spent a large amount of time (a month?) going through different classes and pretty much have decided I just need to hunker down and choose a class to play. However, I'm not sure what to choose so I'm hoping someone can help me decide as I feel right now like I'm spinnin' my wheels - I can't count how many of those stinking ratman hoods, rat tails, and beetle pincers I've turned in!

I've also read a lot of the forums, but most things seem about duoing rather than soloing which is where I'd like to be. It seems every soloer only really takes a necro, druid, or kiting bard.

So here are my thoughts:

>>I'm not a big fan of 2-boxing. I can do it, and will only if I have to, but really don't like to. Only problem here seems to be finding a group ... but then again I love grouping.

>>I'm not too big into casters either it seems. While the mage and wizard were fun a bit, really my heart seems to be in martial combat - nothing like smacking something with a sword or your fist. Kiting ... kinda "meh" about it.

>> Warrior is right out ... just seems like a dead end for me in many ways.

>>I play casually and maybe only 2-3 hours a night on most nights unless something comes up.

After looking at my list I'm guessing that really I'm going to have to choose between Paladin, Bard, or Monk. Which of these do you guys think would be my best bet considering the bullets posted above?

Maybe I'm looking into the wrong game or giving myself too many requirements? I dunno ... help! :)

Bards have a lot to give to grouping and raiding and can solo well. I'd recommend that as your best option given what you listed.

If you are into soloing don't forget about the Beastlord.
But, of what you listed, I think Bard is a good choice.

Yes, you really did limit yourself quite a bit there. Beastlord is actually a pretty good choice. I would recommend investing effort early into Bind Wounds. The first nine levels for a beastlord are a little painful, but after that the pet will help make-up for lack of twinkage. Also, a Beastlord's bare fists are pretty dang good weapons, so you don't really need to buy weapons for a very, very long time.

Early equipment investments would include Companion Health and Companion Strength. The Starfall and Thurgadin quests are also very helpful and will provide early CH and CS.

The class also has grouping appeal. At mid and high levels, they can be the slowers. They also provide some nice buffs. And, in a pinch provide lower level shaman buffs.

A big positive is that if you want to choose a large race, you get a shrink spell which limits the hassle of trying to enter Athica bank with a huge arse.

OK of the classes you have listed. I would lean toward Monk and again, I would work on Bind Wounds from level 1. Mend will eventually help heal you and they get some nice abilities that will reduce the need for gear. Cured Silk is pretty inexpensive (think I saw an advertisement for 1PP each) and is nice to start out with. As with the beastlords you will not need to buy any weapons for a long time.

The Paladin as with the other tanks are very heavily gear dependent. You will not be able to solo well at higher levels without having the best gear money can buy. That is, when you get in your 50's you really need to buy a full set of fully augmented Deepmetal Plate armor. And that is very expensive and hard to find.

Bard. Hmm I am no expert on bards. I have one at around 35 that I don't play anymore. Even with a bit of moderate twinking, I was not able to solo him effectively. I would think that soloing with a bard involves kiting, which you said you did not want to do. You may want to ask some bards about their ability to solo in a straight up fight.
