This is getting to be somewhat of an epidemic, so this one goes out to all those geniuses who've started on Winter's Roar without reading the rules, or have decided that the rules don't apply to them:
[ Character Naming Policy ]
1. No titles. You can't be "Lordgrey" or "Jackthegreat". Sorry.
2. No names from well-known, popular media. You can't be Aragorn, Gandalf or Garfield. Also, excusing it with that you spelled it Ganddalf or Garrfield will earn you a ban for sheer stupidity. On that note, no unrealistic or completely idiotic names either. "Rogue" or "Iksar" are not acceptable names.
3. No wordplays. "Froak Frog" is not an acceptable name, nor is Frog or Froak by itself, but those go under idiotic names anyway.
4. That "you used this name on live" does not mean it magically bypasses the policy. We will not tolerate this excuse. Use the rules here, not the non-existant name rules on EQlive.
5. If a staff member tells you that you need to change your name, please don't argue it.
This is taken straight from the rules page, under the [Character Naming Policy] subsection. People currently reading the forums that did not read the rules, or chose to disregard the rules, I suggest you pay careful attention to the above reiteration. If your name is in violation of one of these, you need to petition for a name change immediately.
Furthermore, in the event that some clarifications need to be made, I will be explaining each rule for your benefit.
1. No titles. You can't be "Lordgrey" or "Jackthegreat". Sorry.
This also applies to surnames. You cannot be Jack Thegreat, Jack the Great, Jack The`Great, or Jack The'Great. Likewise, you cannot be Jackthe Great. You cannot be "the" anything unless a GM gives you the title, you cannot be "of the" anything. Use modern naming real-life naming conventions as a pointer. You are Cindy Jackson or David Brown or Alan Smith, you are not Alan the Smith, Cindy of Jackson Lineage or David of the Browns.
This should be fairly self-explanitory, but some people are still unable to wrap their minds around the idea. This means that you cannot use a name from popular fantasy, such as the Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, the Sword of Truth (or whatever it's really called). There are a few exceptions to this rule, though. Logical exceptions. If there's a character called "Patrick" in Lord of the Rings, this doesn't mean that you can't use it. Relatively obscure references to characters who are not one of the main focuses of the book might just be allowed to pass by a GM. Do not tempt fate, though. Anyone in violation of this rule will be renamed to something crap and will not have the option of changing it to something else, not matter how many times they petition.
3. No wordplays. "Froak Frog" is not an acceptable name, nor is Frog or Froak by itself, but those go under idiotic names anyway.
This also includes onomatoepoeia. You can not be "Slam" the barbarian, "Wham" the monk or "Smack" the pony or "Augh" the ranger. Similarly, you may not have a comical name like "AughhelpImdying" the rogue, "Icantgetagroup" the warrior, etc.
On top of this, you may NOT have names like Wolfrunner, Powersword, Hippyflowers, Wineglass, Bathroommirror, Hotchix, Heavycurtains, Electricguitar... are you starting to see the pattern here? Yes! Combining two words to make a comical, humorous or descriptive name is NOT allowed. See real-life naming conventions again. You may have the occasional girl called Violet or Rose, or the occasional guy called Fox, but this does not mean that you can name your character "Kitchensink" or "Bumblebee". Likewise, you cannot be "Hot Babe" or "Armedto theteeth". Your best bet is to stick with something you made up yourself, or find one of the numerous online name generators and run through those until you find something you like. Offenders of this rule get a crap name from aforementioned generators if they're seen.
4. That "you used this name on live" does not mean it magically bypasses the policy. We will not tolerate this excuse. Use the rules here, not the non-existant name rules on EQlive.
Should be fairly clear. Nullified by the following rule, though:
5. If a staff member tells you that you need to change your name, please don't argue it.
Canttouchdis tells you, 'What do you mean I need to change my name? There's nothing wrong with it ffs. It's totally roleplay cause you CAN'T actually touch me, can you?'
Yes, people come up with wonderful excuses as to why their names are completely and 100%, beyond all question, utterly valid for them to have, and there have been a number of arguments with GMs precipitated by people who have blatantly rule-offending names when they're told they need to change it. Fortunately, this doesn't happen much anymore. Mainly because we stealth-nerf rule-breaking names. However, if you do get a tell from a GM telling you that your name needs to be changed, what they're really saying is: "Your name is going to be changed. Either you can pick the new one, or I will. This is your chance to rename yourself." GM's have the final say. If a GM says that you're breaking a rule, then you're breaking it. Ignorance is not an excuse.
All you innocent folks can play a part in this too. You can enlighten anybody with a rule-breaking name that they have, in fact, a rule-breaking name and that they should petition as fast as they possibly can if they wish to have any choice in the final name of their character.
You may also point out, if they decide to whine at you, that a requirement of playing on this server is to read and follow the rules (to read the rules, not to read in general. Though if you can't read in general you can't- never mind, I'm sure you understand. Fairly sure, anwyay). Not reading and following the rules can/will result in that person being banned. Think it's unfair? Too bad. Life is tough, get a helmet.
