Changing the Client Program Name to "Shards of Dalaya"

Has anyone on the staff ever given any thought to changing the client's/executable's name from "EverQuest" to "Shards of Dalaya"? This would be a very minute change and would likely require minimal coding effort, but it would stand for much more than just that.

The staff of this server have worked for years to differentiate this server from the alternatives. However, when the newcomer finally arrives after having discovered us, after having created an account, after having installed the original game, after having patched for SoD, and so on, the first thing that he or she sees upon the game firing up is "EverQuest" on the top left. The last thing we need is for a new player immediately associating the server with that totally unrelated MMO. How better to put that other MMO from their minds and dispel any lingering preconceptions than by displaying "Shards of Dalaya" front and center (or top and left, as it were)?

Even those of us who have been with this server for years still go through the same thing every day to the point that we now overlook it entirely. The name does not register with the player even when Alt + Tabbing between windows. It is something of an irony that in order to continue to enjoy our stay here and engage in the distinctly non-EQ community in-game, we still do it all via a client whose program name is a misnomer.

Is there a reason this has not been done before? Perhaps it is not legally permissible given that SoD runs on the engine of that MMO? If it is possible, I move that it be done prior to or concurrent with the next account drive.

The client's source is not available and even if it were, rebranding somebody else's work as your own without their permission is not ok.

So in short: Not going to happen

If that's the case, forgive my ignorance. I had no idea it would be tantamount to theft or fraud or whatever the legal jargon may be. Given that Felwithe has been rebranded Athica, Erollisi Marr has been rebranded Althuna, etc., it did not seem much of a stretch to think seeing "Shards of Dalaya" down on the taskbar or while doing Alt + Tab would be out of line.

Would've been nice...

Hrm... Are you talking about the actual executable name, or some logo within the client that says Everquest?

It sounds like you are talking about the executable, which we can not change for both legal and logistical reasons!

But I wanted to make sure, because we may be able to do something if you are talking about a displayed logo.

I was indeed referring to the executable name. As far as any displayed logo in the client that reads EverQuest or EQ, the only thing that comes to mind is the all-purpose "EQ" button that the modern live client uses. I'm unaware of any others.

Thanks for the clarification. :)

EDIT: Come to think of it, in-zone "/who" and the "/who friend all" (a.k.a. "/who all friend") both render the initial line: "Players on EverQuest:" prior to listing said players.

Well, you could always right click the executable file, create a shortcut, and rename the shortcut.

the application window title is part of the compiled code and cannot be changed for everyone so easily.

there are ways you could do it for yourself, but I don't see what the benefit would be since you only mentioned usefulness to new players.

This is very true. My post, however, was in the spirit of that old saying that mentions the strength to change the things you can and the wisdom and patience to recognize and accept the things you can't.

Helping new players get acclimated to SoD is certainly a good thing!
