Can't connect to login server

Hello,

I am new here but maybe you guys can help. I installed EQ, ran the SoD patcher, I got into the game got level 2, then I was disconnected.

Now I can't connect to the login server. I made sure the login server in the eqhost.txt was:

72.55.164.91:5997

Am I missing something?

Hmm, does the log in server go down a lot?

The past few days I have been working on the Main quest which takes me to 1.42EE zones and randomly when I zone I get disconnected and when I try to log back in I can't connect to the log in server. I then try pinging 72.55.164.91 and get "Request Time Out".

Usually what I have been doing is just setting it on a continuous ping then I start to get pings back. At which point I am able to log back in.

My question is: Is this normal? Or has anyone ran into any programs (like firewalls) that could be randomly blacklisting ips?

I love the game and I understand it's free and such. I just want to see if it's on my end (which then I will work to fix) or is this a normal thing. It happens a good 5 or 6 times a day and takes about 15 to 20 minutes before I start to get pings again and can log in.

I got disconnected about 30 minutes ago while zoning and I'm still not able to log in. All my pings are still "Request timed out."

Am I the only one it's happening to?

Well, what's weird is that if I ping the login server from a command line and not even SoD that it comes back "Request timed out"

There have been some periodic routing issues with a major bone provider in Canada. This is possibly why you hare having issues. Try a traceroute/pathping from your ip and one from www.dnsstuff.com to see if there are any differences.

I realize this is an old thread but i am having the same connection issue with the login server it takes me 15-20 minutes just to login i keep getting this message "Error 1001: Could not connect to the Everquest Server! Please try again shortly." and i have tried repatching the files and it does not help, i have reinstalled my Shards of Dalaya and my Everquest and neither helped..i heard recently they are fixing the packetloss issue i do not know if that has anything to do with my zoning disconnections though i am having both disconnections in a zone from the packetloss and i am disconnecting while zoning sometimes..any help? i would appreciate the help.

Same issue, different year. It's now 2011 and I'm having the same problem. Suggestions?

hey, if you found out the problem would you mind posting what you did to fix it? other people are having the same issue too. thanks

I'm having the same sort of issues. Takes a good 30 minutes before i can log back in. Any help would be great (im no computer genius so a plain english explanation would be great)

Well honestly i found out the problem because i know some players filter OOC chat..not sure if the main server is affiliated with the login server or not but as far as i know the main server needs an upgrade to get rid of lag spikes which ultimately are causing a great portion of my disconnections, however i did stop disconnecting last week when they banned a hacker and now i'm disconnecting again...all in all i think it's 50% the server and 50% the hackers...however i agree alot of the Developers/GMs/Admins wouldn't like seeing me post something about hackers in-game on the forum i assure you it's because to not sound so noob i don't know how to send a private message on this forum all i do know is that when that hacker was banned last week i had 0 disconnections up until 2 days ago on friday.

I am still having the disconnection issue. Strangely for me, it seems to go in bouts of 20mins or there abouts. I logged on at 9.46pm, was booted (packet loss rose to 100% while i was traveling through a zone) at around 10.06pm. i was finally able to log back in at about 10.36pm, and had again been booted (same circumstances) at 10.54pm. The whole 20 minute thing might just be a co-incidence
I read all the info above, in particular Boehm's comment about checking the dnsstuff.com website and also a pathping from the command prompt on my PC. I have a copy of the results but I am not sure how i can post them here for someone to interpret.
I am located in Australia, so i am not sure if that would have anything to do with it either.

Any help someone can offer me would be great.

For pathping, just redirect stdout into a text file.

pathping 72.55.164.91 > tracetr.txt

Open it with a text editor and paste it. If that doesn't work, you should just be able to copy it off the cmd terminal.

You should just be able to cut and paste the output off the dnsstuff website.

Here is a copy of the trace done from the command prompt:

Trace complete.

When i went to the dns stuff website it gave me this link to show my results
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/tracert?tool_id=68&token=&toolhandler_redirect=0&ip=72.55.164.91

Hopefully this means something to someone.

Basically, the traceroute is showing that your connection request is probably timing out either at or just prior to the Server's ISP border. I say probably because these tools use ICMP and routers under stress drop
ICMP by default before losing load carrying, which is why hop 13 is "..."

I asked for the dnstools capture because I was looking to see what the response to the server on a different path at the same point in time. Unfortunately, a link isn't of any value because it generates when i click the link at another point in time.

Somethings -
1. The server does patches in the early mornings my time. Anywhere from Midnight - 7 am EDT ( GMT -4 ). This requires a restart and takes about 20 minutes. A real crash is much rarer and usually takes an hour or two to resolve.
2. shardsofdalaya.com is allocated a /29 by its ISP, according to ARIN. All of its public services - web, irc, game, login are aliased to a single IP, the one named above. The game and the web/irc server are different boxes, as an example.

So if you can't connect to the game, but can see the web server. You may want to log into IRC into the #sod channel and see if anything is going on. If its lively chances are there was a patch or something.

I am still having the same disconnect issues. I ran a pathping last night after the game kicked me off, and one not less than an hour ago whilst i was logged in.
Straight after i was disconnected i got this result:

I dont have IRC to be able to log in and check if anything is going on, but i am pretty sure this isnt regularly happening to everyone. Is there something else i can do to play in burst of longer than 30mins without getting kicked? Or am i doomed to the same fate everytime?
