Blessing of the Flame

Surely this is more important than balancing tier 10 content.. or fixing the enchanter class..

Bawwwwwww etc.

Lots of shields and range items dont have aug slots.

I am not saying that the item design is wrong, just wondering if it was something that was overlooked.

I suppose there are shields with no aug slots (tmap/vah shield, noxiious shield to name a few) come to think of it..

I'm not sure if we give Caster shields aug slots truth be told. That'd probably end up a question for Ms. Zae.

To list a few high tier caster shields:

Immaculate Scrying Mirror
Defender of the Voice
Brimstone Buckler
Vorrel, Pupil of Frozen Shadow

All caster shields, all with aug slots. I am pretty sure I have never seen a notable tank shield without an aug slot..

I understand that if you change this for one item, then it would have to be changed for all caster shields -- a daunting task indeed..

I am a little confused why an item dropped in FR is being compared to 4.2 and Sanctum loot. Some items don't have aug slots, it is the choice of the dev. Sometimes it is an oversight, but other times it is intentional. Changing it for one item does not mean it has to be changed for every other item that is similar to the one in question.

This shield has 100mana, giving it an aug slot (even type3) would make it a lot better. For how easy it is to get this shield, I would say that no aug slot seems about right.

When items are created I am assuming that they are balanced with items that take similar difficulty. Since augs are tradeskilled/quested and must be purchased/quested I don't see why they would be used to balance one item with another.

I would agree it was a stretch comparing this with high tier shields but they are ones that came to mind right away.

Adding an aug slot has a lot to do with balancing items, because it adds an additional 24 or 30 mana or whatever stat you might want.

But it's universal depending on aug type.. how does that change the balance? +30 mana to one item is +30 to another..

If 100 mana makes this item balanced with others with similar difficulty then I would assume if this shield had an aug slot, it would then be changed to 70 raw mana with a type 2 aug slot.

I think one of us is confused, or not understanding the other one. Adding an aug slot just makes an item strictly better, so they don't always have them for certain items (range items never have them, except one from PoFire, but that may have changed). They could add an aug slot to this shield, but then they would probably remove 20 or more mana to compensate, or remove some of its other stats. The shield was most likely balanced knowing it was not going to have an aug slot.

I think you missed my edit. I agree that if this had an aug slot, the other stats would have to be reduced in order to keep it balanced. My OP was not 'make this shield better by adding an aug slot' it was 'why does this shield not have an aug slot'.

Using whether an item has an aug slot or not as a way to balance items seems odd to me. Wouldn't it make more sense to have aug slots standard on items (ranged items aside) and then utilize actual stats to balance items? Maybe this is just me being short-sighted..

For the most part you are right. Most items have aug slots to allow for variability, but there are definitely some items that do not have aug slots because the dev has decided they don't want the item to have one. It is usually only an issue on shields.
