best race for rouge?

The gnome haste bonus is probly the best for minmaxing. However, that being said, halflings are win.

Vah I'm reasonably certain can be rogues, and get an atk bonus at night. Though probably gnome.

gnome probably best choice. If you wanna look purty, you would be pretty well off with vah too. Also depending on how you intend to play (ie groups and solo or hardcore raiding) might be a factor too. In crap gear vah would be an easier/better choice than gnome, especially while levelling up. (better starting stats which wont matter much in top notch gear but will in worse stuff).

Since backstab can only be hasted by so much, wouldn't the Gnome haste advantage become less and less relevant for a Rogue as he progresses?

No because pure melee still makes up a fair amount(Try 50% or more) of your damage.

Unknown attack bonus at night versus haste bonus always.

Also cats just fucking look dumb and cant even fit through some doors because of their dumbness.
