Do you need to be auto attacking from the front for this to work? Or can you simply be on his agro listing and standing in front?

You must swing at the mob. It gives you a message to tell you that you are deflecting some attacks

kick doesnt refresh fast enough to aux thouroughly, so, its less than kick refresh timer. whatever that may be.

You have to be swinging at them, although the effect lasts a few seconds even if you only swing once, I believe.
