Augment type

What determines the type of augment an item will take? I have some items with type 1, type 2, and type 3, and some items that are not augmentable. In looking at the items, I cant really see a pattern for the type of aug.

Jewelry = 3
Cloth/Leather = 1 (to be 5)
Metal = 2
Bows = 4

What about some of the items that have no aug slot, is that by design or something that is being determined for the future?

Well, if they fall into any of the 4 categories above, they might have been missed.

Weapons and some other items like range slot idols are not meant to have augs.

Is there somewhere I can read up on this a bit more? I really dont understand what you mean by Augments.
