Anyone know what is needed to record game play?

I've seen several movies on youtube and the like, and was curious as to what programs I would need to record game play. Haven't seen anything on the forums about it, so if anyone knows a good program to try then thanks in advance.

Also get VirtualDub, Fraps makes huge files and needs to be converted to a lower filesize to be uploaded to Youtube.
