Hi, I was talking over the issue of Archery’s autofire with a friend and I think I might have something that could help. I understand the reasons behind not wanting a ranger to have an auto bow like melee (ranger too) have for auto attack. The main reason it seems there is no auto bow (other than I get a feeling devs don’t play rangers as any sort of main) is that someone would be able to box a high damage toon with minimal effort. I understand that autofire would make it pretty simple to box a ranger but past that argument and the fact that most classes are relatively simple to box, taking a ranger from one extreme to another (probably the most focus intensive class to box to possibly the least, while producing high dps) might seem unbalancing in SoD.

In EQlive during 1 of the beta’s a ranger used a macro system to push the archery attack button rapidly instead of using the EQ autofire button. What he found was not a massive but very noticeable DPS loss using the EQlive autofire. The reason was because the EQlive autofire was more or less spamming slower than his macro.
I was wondering if it would be possible for a Dev to look at what could be done with setting up a permanent autofire key with a speed that would lower Ranger dps but not to an extreme of half Archery DPS I would hope.
To toss out unrealistic but simple numbers to represent what I am proposing as a “fix” to saving keyboards and help with the fight against arthritis. If a ranger were able to do 500 strait dps, no nukes but with himself spamming archery, then with the use of a autofire it would put the ranger more around 425dps or somewhere around that. I would think that the autofire speed would effect all bow’s equally but being I can’t test this seeing it’s a rule breaker I can’t tell for sure.
I would think of course a few different fast delay bows and a few slower delay speed bows would have to be tested to know.

In the end I love the class and the server, you guys do a great job and I’m ok with nothing being changed with archery but it never hurts to ask =D.

In some of those threads people are mentioning making the range attack macroable as an alternative.. where range attacks can be bound to a button so you only need to press it once every 2-3 shots.

The arguments against it was that range attack is not an ability, but is it not possible to do it by /cm rangecommandhere?
I tried finding more argumetns against it but most of the time the conversations got sidetracked to saying no auto-fire cause rangers can then afk dps. which would not be possible with a macro command, since you still need to press it every 6-7 seconds.

Just curious ;)

Kinda like how a rogue can macro a few backstabs and duck out of combat with 1 macro, or a monk can auto attack and tab back every so often and hit a macro that auto flops and starts attacking again automatically.

I fail to see how pressing a range attack macro every 7 seconds would be any different or overpowering.
 
Because the client does not allow it. Otherwise it may have been done already iirc from a few of the old threads.
 
Meh. I don't hate the idea playing a main ranger myself... But like it has been said it's a client issue.

And really if you are looking to play Ranger, you HAVE to know you'll be spamming an hotkey button high end... and that's pretty much how it is. Live or die by it.

Ranger is too box friendly as it is, pushing a button every 5 seconds is not too hard to do.

Maybe an idea would be to put in bows that have a shorter delay (like swiftshot speed) but better ratio than the end game bows there are right now, so that to get the best dps possible you really need to main the ranger.

Edit: And no, I do not think auto fire is the way to go with rangers, especially since this game lacks buttons to push for ranger other than ranged attack and the occasional nuke in between.
