Not sure how it would be incorporated, if it's possible at all, but achievements. WoW has them. The Xbox 360/PS3 have them (or some iteration of them). Many Steam games have them. It's the future and it's what the people want!
For those unsure what Achievements are... they are meaningless tasks to complete for bragging rights, a sense of completed-ness or whatever rewards the developers want to give away. They could be anything, easy or hard, meaningful or pointless, stuff that would unlock over the course of leveling or something you'd have to go out of your way to get. I'm going to wing a few ideas off the top of my head, keep in mind I haven't actually been playing for a very long time... so bear with me if some of them are dumb. It's just to get a gist of some possibilities.
- Complete your Main Quest
- Be a part of a full group for longer than an hour.
- Spend 24 hours (real time) total in groups of more than two players.
- Land the killing blow, or have your pet land the killing blow, on a total of 1000 enemies.
- Land the killing blow, or have your pet land the killing blow, on a total of 100 enemies on each continent.
- Land the killing blow, or have your pet land the killing blow, on <named NPC>.
- Hail 'a beggar' in every city. (perhaps they can have funny/entertaining dialog to make this more interesting)
- Sell 15 items on the Vendor List.
- Buy 50 items from the Vendor List.
- Have <item 1>, <item 2> and <item 3> all in your inventory at the same time.
- Something involving PvP
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this won't be a popular idea.
However, think about it. At it's very worst it's just something else to do in the game when you're bored, as meaningless as it may be (though for those that complete all the achievements 100%, maybe there could be some kind of reward?). At it's best, it encourages players (new and old) to try things they may have never considered before, hunt in places they've never considered before, actively find and/or start groups when they would normally just solo or two-box on their lonesome... all to get those precious achievements.
Like I said, probably won't go over well. For all I know it could be impossible to implement (or just not worth the amount of work it'd take), but it was just an idea I thought would be entertaining to bring to SoD. Feel free to post your thoughts.
