Even with bad jokes players in groups tend to be accomodating...try to not say things in ooc. It gets crazy out there. What I do is keep it filtered most of the time. When it is on I try not to pay attention to the people that act stupid or absurd. If you want to make a joke I recomend a few things(mainly for /ooc):
A) wait for the right moment, no random, " OMFG this l33t guyz just gave me A_mastercrafted_sword!!!! Think I can take this GNoll pupz ROFLZZZ!!!!! (not that people have EVER said anything like that  )
B) Dont EVER expect the reply that you want. Unless you are being simple and answering an easily explainable question to someone, you will likely get about 5 replies(depending on the time) with all sorts of comments, half of them TOTALY off track.
C) Just dont...avoid /ooc unless you want to help newbs with questions or ask one yourself.
D) I started EQ when I was 12 myself (long long long time ago....like 6 yrs ago? bad math ... anyways: ) I found that keeping my coments simple was the safest thing for me to do to prevent being picked on about my age. Long winded replies tended to come out wrong.
E) Dont let the people get to you. GMs usually try to keep things simple and fast. Don't bug them...they have better things to do, and THEY know it. Other people...well...stick with your friends, thats all you can do I guess.
And dont think EVERYONE hates you. One or two goofy comments are nothing....really.
GL!
