A New Player Guide

Dalayan Elder
I wasn't sure where to post this, I thought S&R but that seemed to be more server changes while this seemed more player driven.

I have been playing SoD on and off since late 2010 early 2011 and I have enjoyed it a lot. Like most people I have taken breaks here and there but for the most part, especially in the last year or two, I have been pretty consistent.

When I first started my impressions of this server were wildly different than they are now and I think that had a lot to do with my play style and times along with a general lack of understanding about the server. The wiki is a great source of information and is just packed with great guides from questing to hunting/leveling. There are very few things on this server that cannot be found with creative or persistent searching. One thing I think is missing is a new player guide. Not a "level here for quickest leveling" but more of a "What to expect and how to maximize your fun".

This sever almost has a life of its own and one thing I have noticed, especially when I first started, that it can be frustrating and even intimidating for new players to get started here. I think the speed of progression for leveling is perfect and the accumulation of money can be very good for low levels if they know where to go and what to look for.

When I first leveled I spent a lot of time searching the wiki and forums for items, quests, tips and pretty much anything I could to better prepare for the experience. I asked a lot of questions of Tamlissa and Grinkles and got a lot of help from both and especially Irelc.

I noticed a lot the frustration from newer players looking for help and getting just a bunch of sarcastic answers to their questions in Dalaya's Beginners but especially /ooc. While people directing them to the wiki is helpful and some of the best advice that can be given, I feel like in combination with the less than helpful answers (which I thought were more common) that it gives a very unfriendly feeling to the server.

My vision for this guide is to give the inside edge to people who may not have even rolled their first character. There are a number of things that I feel are well known to veteran players but newer players wont find out until they are faced with the decisions, sometimes well into the creation of their character. A few examples are Alignment, Religion, basic knowledge of the server, leveling tips, the CoI, BS, SC factions, etc.

I have only done CoI, I have heard it is the easiest while I have heard that BS is the most tedious. One reason I have heard BS is so tedious is because it requires you to farm a lot of green mobs by the time most people do the quests at 65. That is a piece of information that I would like to include so that people can plan to try to level in those areas and ultimately make the game more fun for them.

Another example is the super loot that drops from some lower level mobs (which I thought was an amazing add by the way) such as the Vision Glove from the Gnoll Visionary, the mask from the Frilak master, bracer from the Kobold king, sword from Lord J in BB. While it may not be worth farming these items for some people (I didn't start raiding till recently and wore a number of those items for a very long time, at least 125aa past 65). In that same vein, places to level that simply cant be missed like Cesspits. Not only is that a great zone for low levels but the loot there can really give them the edge in leveling and access to haste, focus effects, WR bag, and some of the best money at that level.

In my professional life I have had a motto to work with as a consultant: Equip, Educate and Empower! I want to equip them with a resource for quick reference that provides an overview of what you can expect from the sever and from leveling your character. I want to educate them on their choices and allow them to plan for their character and once empowered with the knowledge and resources from the guide I would like to believe we will obtain a higher amount of retention.

What I need from you is your experience. Are there things you wish you knew when rolling your first character? Are there things you've only since learn from the rolling of your last character? Do you know any helpful tips or tricks that will be beneficial to spread around?

I have come to about the end of my knowledge and I feel the guide is nearly complete. I need to organize it a little better (its pretty stream of conscience right now) and put some finishing touches on it. I would like to have this complete and ready for new players before the next account drive.

I think it's great that you want to help out new players.
I too find it frustrating when folks answer sarcastically in /ooc. I have always tried to answer nicely in DB or just not answer at all. I always think it is good to point people to the wiki when ever possible. Usually, it's because I have already checked and the answer is there and it can be quicker for a person to read the answer versus trying to explain it. The listing system for example. Lots of folks have spent hours adding information to the wiki so that it can be the first stop for people with a question. I am constantly reading that some people just didn't want to look up the information themselves.
A few of the things you mentioned (Alignment, Religion, ) have explanations and links on the wiki's main page. There are guides for all classes on the individual class page. Some of them are outdated, but the information on most is still valid.
If I would suggest adding something to your guide I would focus on some of the major differences to starting players from the Live server. /cm specialize help , comes to mind. Over the years many new players scratch there heads when they see those points and wonder what they are all about. But again, all that stuff is on the wiki.
I wish you good luck in finishing your guide.

Be sure to at least mention the newbie area guides that I spent all summer writing!

I would love to have a better newbie guide.

You may want to include things such as:
There was once someone that had an account set up to give new people to SoD 10 plat as a start up fund for spells etc. (not sure if that is still a thing but might be nice)
Items to collect and keep to sell to players:
Bone Chips, Ectoplasm, Bat blood, Wolf blood, hides/silks are all things that jump to my mind off hand. If this is something you are going to put on the wiki then players could update this with buyers of these as well to help the newer players to know where to send these items and the "normal" price at that point in time.

I think it was Deein that set this up. I honestly believe that spells should be free from the vendors until the point of dropped spells is reached... That is just me though...

They are pretty damned affordable, especially since we drastically upped all the newbie quest rewards last summer.

tenplats is still an account. it has helped out i think 3 people max? nobody has requested therefore he hasn't been used.

Very cool. I haven't started fresh in... a while... I rescind my point if quest rewards were buffed to help offset the cost of spells.
