A couple things

I know for a fact this was brought up before but I'd like to bring it up again. I think being able to hire a merc, or apprentice (same class as you) would be a great idea. Personally DCing is fun for a little while but for me I lose something playing two characters. I like taking on the identity of my character and when I'm two boxing I lose that. I know server population is rising but there are still times, even with 350+ population were I go hours without being able to find a group and have to resort to two boxing, starting an alt, or logging off. I don't know if anybody else feels this way I just think it would add some more depth to the game and a lot more fun. On the other hand there is a huge balancing issue that would come with it (more group wise) but I'd really like something to be done about it, maybe an alternative to kill grinding that gives around the same exp? I really don't know where else to go with this, I hope you get the idea and realize I'm not putting this server down in any way. I just find it can get very boring, more so for casual players.

I think this could be a great idea. I think it would cut back on bandwidth of dual-clienting (It does eat up more, right?) as well as you could immerse yourself in your character alot more. Have the merc or apprentice take half the exp, just like dual-clienting, and make him have the same AI as mobs; you can't control them and they are quite stupid. That way you would much rather take a real person over the computer AI.

I'm sure alot would need to be ironed out, but I think it's a much better system than the current dual-clienting issue.

Very interesting but here is another perspective:

You want to be as powerfull as 2 characters, but dont feel like playing the other char.
You dont want to use illegal bot controlling software to do it so you want the dev team to create a slave bot for you instead.
Whats next, you want them to add a third bot as well, how about a full group? Or wait, you want a raid? Where does it stop?

Please dont take this as an insult or flame, just an alternate point of view!

In time as the server becomes more popular, the problem will dissolve.

Be safe or lucky, either works :D

Sorry, bad idea.

What's to keep you from two boxing anyway, thus making even more exp as a 4 character, 1 man group?[/u]

The same thing that keeps people from four boxing now, but you're probably right about it being a bad idea.

Speaking of which i'm not a fan of the dual-clienting, I think maybe in the days when the server was like 60 people it was great. But with 350+ logging in simultaneously during peak hours each day, that's pretty dang good. I've just ahd a hard time grouping lately, and it's frustrating seeing two people your same level and thinking "oh wo can group and get xp bonus," then they deny you cause they're dualing and will be logging soon, even though when you die an hour later and run back for more they're in the same spot. Grr...

I kinda agree, I would love to see dual-clienting taken out. However, I can imagine how well it'd go over with the people who have spent X hours getting both their characters up to 65 just to find out they can't play it any more. But yeah, I do hate how you can't even find peeps who are LFG because (AFAIK) you can't LFG while grouped with your other box.
Personally, I don't two-box because I feel it kills immersion. I like feeling that I am escaping to a whole other lifestyle, a swift ninja monk, or whatever. When you're playing both a monk and a shaman, it just feels like work.
This is the reason I liked the bot idea. Speaking of which, I wouldn't want you to be able to give the bot commands or anything like that. If it's a healer bot, it should try and heal you if you're low on life. If it's a melee bot, it should melee and cast like a regular mob does. KS problems would happen, so I'd imagine it would attack whatever you attack. If you use a bot, you shouldn't be allowed to dual-client, of course. It should take the normal share of exp that dual-clienting would, and maybe a bit extra if needed.
Dual-clienting would still be better as they can actually control that other character. The bot would be extremely stupid, like a mob.
Ah well *shrug* was a good idea I thought.

I tend to agree that two-boxing does kill immersion, so obviously those who prefer to immerse themselves fully for whatever reason won't be too keen on this idea.

That said, I two-box (low level), and find it quite fun in its own right. It's a challenge, and to two-box properly requires a high degree of skill, which I think should be respected - to a point, obviously. I tend to log on one character and attempt to find a group/solo, and if that fails, I'll log on the other box and play until I can get a group, at which point I'll log one of the characters off and resume my immersive play.

Maybe you guys could do the same? Just a suggestion.

While I fully understand the immersion argument, taking away two boxing will probably make the server population drop. If I could log in and never have the option of poking around with my two little newbie toons of the week, or use a second character to complete a step of a quest, I think my interest would fade pretty fast.

And I don't think I am the exception. Many two box to catch up in levels with their friends who can play more often, too.

You love immersion and roleplay, fine, but you can't twist my arm until I love it too, tho. I think there is room for everyone, anyway.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I feel that dual-clienting helps make groups, at least in the higher levels / dungeons. By the time we get to lvl 65 + many AA's, a lot of people usually only DC when they have to. I've never had a problem getting someone to log a bot so that another single-cliented character could join, in fact, most of the time people ask "do I have to bot?" If I'm making a group I'll always ask whatever shammy is on if he is LFG and gladly camp my shammy bot for him; after all, its more fun to just play one. The only reason a dual cliented character is taken over a mained one (again, from what I observe in the groups that I'm in) is because that class is needed for whatever place we're going. If we're going to cata, someone may get left out for a DC'd monk, but if no one botted that monk then there would be no cata group. In my opinion, in the end game dual clienting is more a tool to fill out needed spaces in a group, than to replace a single-cliented character.

Feel free to disagree :)

I 2box (dual client actually). I have done so for years, it is how I enjoy playing the game. In game, I am a bit of a loner by nature. Typically off getting exp by myself, or camping an item by myself. 2boxing actually increases my ability to interact with players because it gives me the freedom to run port someone with my druid while the other character holds the camp/etc.

When I do group or raid, I use the same rules that most responsible 2boxers do. One roll per PERSON (not toon), and in groups you always make room for a person over a 2box.

The neat thing about this game is that there is a huge variety of ways to have fun. I like to play many different classes... others like to pick one and level it to 65 with 300 AAs before even thinking about an alt. The game is big enough and complex enough that all these styles should be able to have fun without the need to belittle other ways of playing the game.
