2 boxing and higher levels/grouping

Hi all, just a quick question. I generally dislike 2 boxing but accept it as a necessary evil since there aren't always going to be similarly leveled folks to group up with. What I'm wondering is at higher levels when grouping and raiding and whatnot, are people generally 2 boxing there too? Or at that point does it switch over to one person per "main"?

Some people don't 2box at all, some people 2box almost 100% of the time, and everything in between. If you're a good boxer that can be very helpful but plenty of high tier players don't box for a variety of reasons.

In my experience on a typical raid of 18 characters, anywhere from 2 to 7 or 8 will be boxes.

Being able / willing to box something makes you 100% (literally) more valuable to a guild. There is nothing more frustrating on a raid night when a cleric / tank / dps doesn't show up and nobody will step up to box him in so the raid can continue.

I would highly suggest practicing and getting comfortable with boxing - it always comes in handy.

You're doing yourself a favor, too, because if your xp group lacks that one necessary class you'll be able to play it alongside your own toon and things will go on perfectly smoothly.

Thanks for the quick answers guys.

Nothing saying I couldn't box sometimes, was just wondering what the percentage is at higher levels and if it would be frowned on to not be permanently 2 boxing. Honestly trying it in the past I don't feel like its tough, I just prefer playing one character at a time, mostly as an immersion thing.

I can only speak for myself, but I'll say that grouping as a single character is usually the preferred option for me, and I do not usually have trouble getting into a group simply as one toon. It may be nice to Alt+Tab and see a second wall of yellow after a kill, but 2boxing wears my mind out much faster than single boxing. Constantly having to approach every single encounter from the perspective of two disparate classes, frantically trying to prioritize on the spot during emergencies (do I heal the dying Ranger or mez those two adds? think fast!), juggling micromanagement of two spellbars, inventories, buffs, etc. really does diminish enjoyment over time. Not to mention the potential for socialization decreases when a full group that might have consisted of six players ends up being handled only by three.

All that aside, I get the impression that most raiding guilds regard fewer boxes as better, as it means less people will be going through the raid with divided attention. As Ludovician said, sometimes a key class is missing from the night's lineup and a box will need to be brought in, but hopefully, this will happen infrequently in whatever raiding guild you wind up in, sangren. :)

I didn't box at all until quite a good chunk into 65+ and AA's for a variety of reasons, not the least being a crappy PC and bad connection.

Nowadays I almost always box for convenience. I prefer not to, esp. when hardcore grouping or raiding but it sure adds a lot of flexibility on the costs of it being exhausting at times.

I love 2 boxing and do it so frequently that even when I'm not boxing I still try to AltTab to my other character! But about 80% of the people I know never box at all, and the rest are somewhere in between. Raids try to avoid boxing b/c it is much easier to react to things going on when everyone is unboxed, but most of the time I see 2-5 extra characters being boxed.

Basically, if you only want to play 1 character, you'll be fine. It might be harder to do things on your own depending on your class but grouping shouldn't cause any trouble.

being able to box - and do it well - is an valuable asset in this game and it does make you a more desirable player, but it's not required by any means. if you don't like doing it or don't seem to be good at it, i would suggest just forgetting about it. however, if you enjoy it, it's a good thing to practice, it will come in handy

I box my warrior most of the time. On a raid, if there are empty spots, I might box a wizard for extra dps, but if it's a challenging target that requires lots of quick heals, then I will not box, or I will let the box just sit around on the named fight.

That said, having a box is great for farming and allows you to kill harder mobs. Having a box allowed me to buy needed items much sooner than if I soloed. Sometimes I will solo easier mobs while my box is fishing, because it's more relaxing than alt tabbing every few seconds.

When making a alt, I always make two and box them, because it makes the leveling through lower levels much less tedious. I actually prefer that to power leveling.
