1001 error, I'm new...

Hey guys,
I've already browsed for a solution for this, but every thread I found was out of date.

I can't log in, user name and password are correct. Sometimes I get to the server screen...then get an error, but most of the time I just get the error on the log in screen.

Here is the deal....

I'm on a brand new comp with windows vista 64 bit.

Recently I have been having some network issues, I set my IP settings to have a static IP (I think that's what its called) which alowed myself to be put in the dmz on my router, so I shouldn't have to do any port forwarding.

I have a Bigfoot Networks: Killer Network card that I'm using, that I noticed had its own mini firewall that I disabled.

Windows Firewall is disabled.

I'm running NOD32 Antivirus system.. which shouldn't be causing and problems (I hope, now that I remembered, going to look into it)

Am I forgetting anything that should be done, that might fix this problem of me not being able to log in?

Help please :[

again.. sorry If this is posted already... but I couldn't find a thread that sounded like my problem.

Any suggestions / help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, first off, you don't want to be in the dmz on your router. The DMZ is a demilitarized zone. It's there so the internet can get to the dmz without getting to the rest of your network. You'd have a machine in the dmz if you wanted it to run as a server.

Second, check if you can get to the web site using Internet Explorer. If you can't, that's why you are having trouble.

Lastly, your real ip is what is on your router. It's probably not static. A static ip just means that your provider has assigned you a permament IP address. You don't need one to run the game.

Hmm, so Take myself out of the dmz and try and do some port forwarding.. I'll try..

(I'm actually using IE right now.. lol)

I was refering to the dialog box with properties for your LAN connection, you can either obtain information automatically or put in your own IP / default subnet mask / default gateway and DNS
I used this so I could know what number to put in the DMZ setting.

Also, I run my own ventrilo server, which does not work If I'm using "Obtain information automatically"

so far I hate vista :(

Is anyone willing to help me out with port forwarding via remote access with Teamviewer?

It's a free online remote access program. Not really sure what to do :[

I'd recommend help with that program from that program's website. Since few to none here will have any knowledge of it.

1) Are you able to connect to the internet currently from the host?

2) Why do you need to set up port forwarding? Deny all external inbound and allow all internal outbound should be adequate for your home network and will allow you to connect to SoD. The only reason you would need port forwarding is if you are making a service accessible through the firewall/router.

3) Wesell is right. Connections were limited in Windows NT family OSes beginning with XP SP2 and this is enforced by vista. You can change the registry if you want but I wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you are doing.

netstat -ab in cmd.exe should tell you whats listening/established. You may want to post it if you don't know what is necessary.

4) Many AVs have host based firewalls now. You might want to check that and disable it. Windows firewall also has a nasty habit of tuning itself back on.

1. I'm not sure what you're asking, simplify for my simple mind przz :( ....I do have internet and it works currently.

2. I was told port forwarding would fix my problem

3. erm...

4. All firewalls are off.

Port forwarding has nothing to do with this. You'd want to use port forwarding if you were playing a peer to peer game, doing other p2p things, or running something that needed to accept new connections from the internet. It's sort of a pseudo dmz thing only for specific ports.

Do you have Internet Explorer, and if so, can you access shardsofdalaya.com through it?

Ok. What is your eqhost.ini file saying?

It should be in your main game directory.

It should be like this:
[Registration Servers]
{
"72.55.164.91"
}
[Login Servers]
{
"72.55.164.91:5997"
}

3. erm....

That means turn off torrents, streaming audio, irc, instant messaging etc... all of it. Then try and connect. I would cycle your isp modem/router/thingy too.

Have you changed your ISP modem/router lately and what is the make and model ?
Who is your isp as well?

If you can connect to the SoD site from the vista machine, something is blocking the client comm stream. The most likely spot is at your vista machine(since its security model is from hell) or at your isp modem/router/thingy (since these are cheap and stupid.)
.
After that its possible your isp may be filtering or just suck.

Lol, it's funny you rant about vista. Here is an update:

I copied all of my eq files to my old computer running xp32bit

Guess what, I have no connection problems what so ever

So my old comp works, and my new one does not :[

I do have my old machine in the DMZ though and it's running a ventrilo server for me. I did try putting the new machine in it like I said earlier, but didn't get any change from it, So I think it's just a problem on my new machine... Wanna help me figure it out?! :D

I don't mind helping, but I think the best thing you can do is install xp on it. The vista security model is poorly implemented. The admin account does not have admin privileges unless you turn off part of the security. You have to install some programs in the root directory to get around the System account assigning lower then assigned and necessary privileges to the process at runtime.

It as though someone took a manual on implementing mandatory access control
implemented half of it, threw in a couple arbitrary changes, and didn't document how it works.

I have meetings until 9pm est so I am not the bestif you need help today :p

You can verify it's not the dmz by simply switching that old machine to the regular non-dmz side and seeing if EQ still works.

Yeah it will break the vent server but you can put it back after testing, OR you could use port forwarding for ventrillo. (see, that's what port forwarding is for.)

Ok, so I changed my old computer back to "Obtain automatically" an IP, removed it from the DMZ... and tried connecting to SoD again... and it works fine, So whatever the problem is, it's with my new comp.

:(

Vista 64 bit faiiilsss

Anyone have any ideas? (other than installing a new operating system)

Well, I know lots of people use Vista and manage to play SOD.

It's probably in Vista's security setting somewhere.

Since you have a router, you're already pretty safe. Try disabling Vista's security entirely and see if it works. If it does, you know where to look.
