Not sure if anyone has already mentioned it but i'll go ahead and post this fix. Its helped me and my friend, as recently as last night.
Check your network connections. Disable any connections that you are not using. I have 2 network adapters and a wireless adapter in my PC. At one point i had to disable some of that to get rid of the 1001 error. It seems the login gets confused and will try to connect through a disconnected network when it is not disabled.
My friend has a wireless connection and a adapter, with the adapter just listed as unplugged but not disabled he got the 1001 error until he disabled it.
This may not fix all 1001 problems but its worth a try.
NOTE: This obviously will not work if the login server is just plain down for business..
