I've been really getting into stand-up comedy lately (been doing some talent shows at school) and I'm wanting some suggestions on some really good comics to check into seeing. I've already seen both of Lewis Black's Comedy Central Stand-ups along with a few others, but hey it's always good to learn about more.

Margaret Cho is great. I also kind of like Dane Cook but it's kind of immature.

Lisa Lampanelli is the shit. Except if you're one of those people that can't take racist joke or a lot of cussing.

Patton Oswalt
Greg Berehndt (sp?)
David Cross
There's a swarm of others, but I don't want to list 'em all now. I can provide albums if there's adequate interest--I really like standup :3

I think it's quite obvious that they all fade next to Denis Leary.

If only because his lack of funny is so very corrosive :P

Dave Chapelle
The Amazing Jonathan
Steve Martin
Robin Williams (early 80's when he was still on coke and funny)

ZOMG
Any who know him might think this odd of me, since I'm probably the most "G"-rated member of Final Empire, but let me say just one thing:
Eddie Izzard (http://www.eddieizzard.com/thingie_things/video.izz)
Which would you choose: "Cake or Death?"

WTF...
George Carlin can not be overlooked. He is brilliant.
I agree with the David Cross suggestions as well. He's nearly as bitter and mean as ol' George. :)

But the bitterness and meannes just doesn't do it for me. It's not funny. /shrug
Agree = Eddie Izzard

Mitch Hedburg was great... Dane Cook seems to have recently become hugely popular, but I personally don't like his new stuff (Retaliation) very much. Being a Canadian, I watch a lot of Just for Laughs, which not surprisingly stars Canadian comedians on a regular basis. 2 of my favouritse are Jeremy Hotz and David Nystrom.

^^ titus is hilarious, its a shame his show got cancelled
I think that to be a sucessful stand up comedian you need to be 1.) fresh and 2.) original
try not to rely on the styles of other comedians, otherwise you come off just looking like a dude trying to be a comedian.
if anything, watch as much professional comedy as possible then do something that you havent seen before
but make sure its funny

You might try and see what kind of improv comedy your city has. Just do a google search and you might be surprised at what you find. Improv by nature will provide you with a lot of experience that just can't be bought elsewhere. (As a plus, in my experience most improv comedy troupes are willing to take on new members, if you are willing to work at it and attend weekly practice sessions, amateur performances, and such.)

Izzard is some damm fine stuff. Also I'm surprised no one mentioned him that I saw but Bill Hicks (R.I.P.) has some really good stuff. Used to characterize himself as "Chomsky with dick jokes". Also check out good ol' sam kinison and some of the old eddie murphy standup is pretty good imo. Then of course you've got people like Henry Rollins who runs his talking shows (which aren't truly comedy but usually funny as all hell), if you haven't seen one of these....go...go now. Travel even, they're worth it. Saw him up in Pa a couple of years ago at state college, was freakin great and only cost like 5-10$ to get in.
Oh and some of my favorite bill hicks quotes
"Fundamentalist Christianity. Fascinating. These people actually believe the world is 12 thousand years old. Swear to God! Based on what? I asked them. 'Well, we looked at all the people in the Bible, and we added them up all the way back to Adam and Eve, their ages – 12 thousand years.' Well, how fucking scientific! Okay. I didn't know that you'd gone to so much trouble there. That's good.
You believe the world's 12 thousand years old? 'That's right.' Okay, I got one word to ask you. A one word question. Ready? 'Uh-uh.' Dinosaur.
You know, the world's 12 thousand years old and dinosaurs existed, and they existed in that time ... you'd think it would have been mentioned in the fucking Bible at some point. 'And lo, Jesus and the disciples walked to Nazareth. But the trail was blocked by a giant brontosaurus ... with a splinter in his paw. And O, the disciples did run a-shrieking: "What a big fucking lizard, Lord!" But Jesus was unafraid, and he took the splinter from the brontosaurus's paw, and the big lizard became his friend. And Jesus sent him to Scotland where he lived in a loch for O, so many years, inviting thousands of American tourists to bring their fat fucking families and their fat dollar bills. And O, Scotland did praise the Lord: "Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord."'"
"A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. You think when Jesus comes back, he ever wants to see a fucking cross? Kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on, you know."
This ones a serious one but I like it
"The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, 'Hey – don't worry, don't be afraid ever, because this is just a ride ...' And we ... kill those people. Ha ha, 'Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.' It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter, because – it's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace."
"They say rock 'n' roll is the devil's music. Well, let's say that it is; I've got news for you. Let's say that rock'n'roll is the devil's music and we know it for a fact to be the absolutely, unequivitely true.
Boy, at least he fuckin' jams! Ha ha ha ha! Okay? Did you hear that correctly? If it's a choice between eternal hell and good tunes and eternal heaven and new kids on the fuckin' block ... I'm gonna be surfing on the lake of fire, rockin' out ... high five at Satan every time I pass the motherfuckin' shore!"
"Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we're the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."
"I'll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here. 'I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.' 'I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.' 'Hey, wait a minute, there's one guy holding out both puppets!'"

Bill Hicks (R.I.P.) hands down the funniest man ever! Rant in E Minor, Arizona Bay, Dangerous, Relentless, all works of a comic genius.
May the goldfish leave lots of lincoln logs in your sock drawer.
"That this house notes with sadness the 10th anniversary of the death of Bill Hicks,
on February 26th 1994, at the age of 33; recalls his assertion that his words would be a
bullet in the heart of consumerism, capitalism and the American Dream; and mourns the
passing of one of the few people who may be mentioned as being worthy of inclusion with
Lenny Bruce in any list of unflinching and painfully honest political philosophers."

It's hard to beat '80s Robin Williams.
Two other personal favorites are Kathy Griffin and Lewis Black, but some people tend to find them annoying and repetitive, respectively. To each their own.

I had no idea who he was until my younger sister brought a movie for me to watch the other day with him in it. I forget the name... something about fast food or a resturant and waiting on people etc. In any event, he's pretty funny, but it seems like he may get kinda vulgor. =p I'd like to check out some of his other stuff and see whta the hype is all about...

some people also dislike him because he tends to favor stupid humor made funny by the delivery and his flailing about, and also that he's generally considered to be a hack and a thief. he, along with larry the cable guy, is extremely unpopular within the industry.
