Guild Wars comes out today. Any of you planning on giving it a try?
http://www.guildwars.com/default.html

Im gonna give it a try, il try any free mmo that comes by. :P
Looks like a really cool game, and from what I understand it was made by the same people who made Diablo/Diablo2. Just not by Blizzard itself but the programers.
Looks like it will be a Diablo/Diablo2 type game but not useing overhead view.

I'm debating on whether or not I want to get it... I need to hear feedback from others and see some reviews (both written and televised) so I can get an idea of what I am going to get myself into.

It's based on PvP. The PvE content is slim.

Being that I am not a big PvP fan (unless it's a first person shooter where everyone is on equal ground), then I'll skip it. It's too bad too, because the engine looks nice.

Gonna stick with WR a while.

I <3 PvP.

Guess thats why It appeals to me so much. I played on Sullon Zek and Vallon Zek for 4 years on EQLive. :P

Im still going to give it a try. What have I got to lose.

Eeeee.. It's not off to a good start... Kinda hesitant about the point and click movement... That's fine for an RTS or Dungeon Siege, but for an ORPG that's PVP heavy... Hmmmmm, I don't think so... IMO that is.

I cant say im a big fan of Point and Click but they made it Point and Click for a reason. They could have just as easily made it use Directional Keys.

I guess what im saying is they probably did a good job of it. Otherwise they would have used a different system of movement. Im going to pick up a copy of GW on my way home from work, il post how I like it and about Gameplay.

Great Game! Well worth the money.

Gameplay is very nice, you can use point/click for movement if you want but I use WADS, you can also use directional keys. Very nice progression through the game so far, as you get farther into the game you do quests to learn new skills, and not just class specific skills. You can be any combo of any classes you like. If you really wanted you could be a Cleric/Ranger or Necromancer/Warrior or Enchanter/Cleric...classes are endlessly customiseable. PvP is amazing, you enter a 'mission' and you are teamed up with 3 other players and are placed in an instance zone to battle against another team of 4 other players. If you lose your group is disbanded but if you win you continue to battle other groups until eventualy you lose. Graphics are top notch, character models are a bit limited though. Terrain is very well done.

If you liked Diablo 2 you will love this game, as it is just like Diablo2 in alot of ways but greatly improved over D2. Far superior PvP, NPC AI, Spells, Classes, Graphics, Gameplay, Ranged Weapons. All around a very very good game.

When i bought this game i was expecting it to be good, but not nearly this good. Im blown away! I havent had this much fun playing a Game sinse EQ or DAoC came out. :D

ps. Tell all my Guildmates in <Beyond> im helplessly addicted to Guild Wars and dont expect to see me around as much. :P :P

There's a link to some of the pictures I took when I first logged in. I'm level 7 now after playing for two days. I really like the PvE portion of the game and the PvP was great during beta, so I imagine it's still wonderful.
Overall, I give the game a 9/10.

looks like the ut2k engine. Is it?

Nice screenshots!

Question about the PVP... Is it forced, like on PVP servers of EQL? Meaning that you have no choice of being ganked as you walk around. Or only when your in 'mission' mode?

Guild Wars uses it's own propreitary engine, with bold vistas and incredible lighting. A couple of effects really stand out.

In the lighting department, you have a great "bloom" effect, which creates a haze around any brightly lit reflective surface. The result, visible in the screenshots shown here, is that the game has a gauzy, ethereal feel. It's like a fantasy painting come to life. Combined with a dynamic sky with shafts of light shining down, the end result is extremely cinematic.

Question about the PVP... Is it forced, like on PVP servers of EQL? Meaning that you have no choice of being ganked as you walk around. Or only when your in 'mission' mode?
You only pvp in an instanced area against another, evenly matched team (generally). Sometimes you are against 3 other teams of 8. 32 players in a PvP area on this gets nice and fun!

All i can say is that i hope the next GW expansion comes with $50 and a note saying "We're sorry" in the box. The game was horrible.

Every review that I have read said mostly positive comments about guildwars. The click movement and slim PvE is all that was considered cons for the game, and there were many pros outweighing the cons. From everything I've heard and seen(from beta) GW will be a pretty decent game. I'm even planning on buying it..

I didn't like the point-and-click movement either, but it's not like you can't just turn that off in the options menu. I find myself using WADS and the keyboard hotkeys and not using the mouse very much at all.

-The game itself, in my opinion, will never have the replay value/longevity as EQ or WoW, but the fact alone that it doesn't have a monthly fee was very appealing to me.

Once I get WR running though, hell i'll probably be playing that more than anything.

IMO Guild Wars is great, and the new expansion has had information announced in this months Computer Gaming World. A new continent, two new classes (Assassian and Ritualist), loads of new pvp and guild options, etc. Get the magazine if you want better details ^_~

This has to be one of the best MMORPGs next to Everquest and Anarchy Online that Ive ever played, contrary to what people keep saying, it IS an MMORPG, and it is not an overly glorified Diablo clone. It has quite a bit of depth and a very good story/lore involved in it, admittedly the PvE isnt that indepth compared to the PvP/GvG but these are what the game was made for. The fact that levels/gear arent what make you godly in this game is a huge plus, it's reliant upon strategy, meaning you have actually THINK >:D and be able to change your tactics on a dime. The class combos and the choice of skill sets are vast and amazing, very indepth and well balanced (a plus). The game isn't clicky movement if you don't want it to be either, you can use directionals/WASD or use the hold down mouse button (like in EQ). Anyways I have nothing but praise for this game, but it is apparently a love/hate for most. If you like to play it solo 90% of the time, this game probably isn't for you, but can't hurt to try, only a loss of 30-40$ for a game you may regret not getting. Cheers to NCSoft and hope they keep up the good work, can't wait for Chapter 2 to be released.

I played GW for about 2 months back in June or so, if things have changed since then, please disregard -

PvE content is somewhat boring and flies by with a modicum of effort.

PvP aspects will interest you if you're into that sort of thing.

The engine is great and the lighting effects are really cool, and even lower-end computers can run almost full blast. However, comparing this game to Diablo II is pretty inaccurate. Aside from the over-concentration on PvP content with little more than a sideways nod to everyone else, my biggest peave with this game was the Gear System.

Diablo II had a great gear system that revolved around randomness, collection of items, and combinational items that made you actually WANT to go out and revisit dungeons to flesh out that Set of armor, ie.

In GW, gear is random, but the constraints on the items are so lackluster that everyone has the same gear, for the most part (again, because of PvP) So after you're done, there's no point in going back to hunt that difficult monster or that great spot where you know gear will drop (like Diablo II or even EQ-Type RPGs) The only concession to this is the ability to "capture" certain elite skills from named monsters (though these can only occupy 1 of your 8 slots).

If you like EQ or SoD for it's core, you probably won't like GW for very long, and if you like PvP shooter type games, this probably won't be your cup of tea either.

Nice try, but not enough to keep my interest.

Saw some updated figures for worldwide memberships to some MMO's.

WOW: 5 million
GW: 600,000
EQ2: 200,000
SoD: 1,000?

Couldn't find numbers for EQ though. Anyways looks like the company is falling on hard times. ;( oh wait, is what I meant. Looks like never listening to your customers and gouging them whenever possible has finally come back to bite them.

I noticed that EQ trashed about 2/3 of their servers.. so they had to of lost a heafty amount of players, and SOD is prolly closer to 400 than 1000...

Its gotta be more than 400 now. There is usually 350 on at peak hours.

I don't play as much as I used to do, but it is still played every now and then. And I still do enjoy the game. I'm just glad my wife and I are not end-gamers. We can enjoy the games for sometime before we even reach the marker everyone has already reached and are waiting for the next expansion to continue on.
