There any way to hotkey the equipping of an item?

Using the EverQuest client? I don't believe so.

The closest I've come to that is having the equip slot and free inventory slot on my quickbuttons, and manually switching between those with the mouse as necessary. It's a pain, but it's faster than opening up the inventory window itself.
